Light Kerchief

(No pictures of me wearing it, currently; forgot to get a friend to help me with that, I guess.)

I made it last October, hoping for something comfortable (I used to wear kerchiefs all the time, especially all summer working at a ranch) and light enough not to overheat, but. . .

I haven't actually worn it at all this summer; I don't know that it would be too hot (more than existing is too hot, this summer) but the slight curve to the edge makes it slide back over the top of my head all too easily when I'm wearing it, (though it doesn't help that I'm out of practise wearing kerchiefs) and also it poofs out a lot at the sides.

This was my first time using a granny square style stitch at all!

(And I haven't since, either. . .)

It was pretty easy!

. . .it did get a little interminable, but I think any kind of stitch would in this sort of thing, really; it took like 18 rows for the base? (I also used a lighter weight of yarn than the pattern calls for, so I expected it to take more rows, which it did.)

Then time to add a pretty edge. . .

And to finish it off, pretty tie ends!

Also if I'd known that it would wind up being impossible to take the end of my chain (I used a double chain, partly for stability/strength) into one of those tie end decorative leaf/feather motifs I would have tied it off somewhere along the kerchief, but instead I would up having to fiddle with it a fair bit connecting the motif to the chain right at the end. Oh, and if I make another, I'll make the ties longer - this one has just enough length to tie at the back of my neck and the motifs be close but not right on top of the knot; a little more leeway would be nice!

Took me a little over 5 hours total.

I think what I actually want to do is go even grittier, even more inhuman and uncanny, like just double down completely but improve the materials, so they are higher-end and more deliberate. Imagine if the fake face were more brutal, yet still kind of fey and delicate like this one, just—made from cement. Plaster is more realistic and feasible—I think I could do that with $20 and some spare time and a little web searching to learn how—but cement would be worse, which is. Important. Artistically.

anyway new kerchief! I should/will probably take a flat Arranged photo too so you can see all the elements of the actual kerchief, but I am so tired and frustrated and also somehow enthusiastic and engaged in the next sample, which is also overdue, that it seems really daunting.

speaking of artistically, I am working on a whole series called Basalt. My current projects are kind of tentative and small, but I have bigger intentions. This is picking up where I was in 2019 (wow I did have a significantly worse and not uniquely worse time the next year; I was not imagining that at all). It’ll probably take more work and time and maybe Website to really bring it all together, but you can see a couple of the more natural handspun samples and one inspirational photo here.
