Today’s columbidae:
New Zealand Pigeon (Hemiphaga novaeseelandiae)
Large iridescent pigeon with blue-green plumage, a white breast, gray undertail and underwing coverts, and a bright red bill with an orange tip. Also called the Kererū or Kūkupa (northern Maori dialect). Endemic to and lives in New Zealand. Has a wide range of habitats, typically where fruit or trees are available. During breeding season, male Kererū perform display flights, which involve ascending to a steep height, appearing to stall at the top of the flight, and then swooping down. Emits soft “oo” calls, also note the sound their wings make when in flush.
Birds of Beau Vista Orchard Wairarapa We have all heard of a “partridge in a pear tree”, how about a “Kererū in a damson tree”? This one visited Beau Vista orchard yesterday. The Kererū, Hemiphaga novaeseelandiae or the New Zealand wood pigeon, is native to New Zealand. Considered a taonga (cultural treasure) to the Mãori people, the kereru was historically a major food source in Mãori culture. However, due to the decline in its population since mammalian pests were introduced hunting is illegal. Customary use of kereru is restricted now to the use of feathers and bones obtained from dead birds collected by DOC. In 2018, the kereru was designated Bird of the Year by the New Zealand organisation Forest & Bird, and in 2019, the exoplanet HD 137388 b was renamed Kereru in its honour.
I adore how the top most image when you search up "kererū" (native wood pigeon to Aotearoa) is one that someone edited to have a little sparkle
It's the least she deserves. look at her. she's so beautiful...
googled kererū to see if i could find size reference for them. found the image and headline of a wonderful little article instead
Obviously I think there should be an emoji for every single bird species ever but if I had a kererū emoji I'd be so fucking powerful they wouldn't be able to stop me.
It absolutely kills me how if I told someone that there was another breed of wood pigeon that looked exactly the same except for being green, they would think I’m describing some sort of very lazy fantasy worldbuilding.
But no, that’s just the kererū.
