Northland: Kerikeri and free camping It may come as a surprise but after all that time spent not planning, I did not have any kind of road trip plan. I was already a long way up North, so I figured I may as well tour around the Northland first. The one thing on my list for Northland was Waipoua forest, a huge forest on the West Coast region full of Kauri trees so I figured I'd aim to get there first. But first I had to stop in Kerikeri to buy a gas stove, and then follow an interesting looking sign to the Kerikeri basin area, a big parkland with a historical stone trade building, a river harbour that the Maori used to use to take their waka (war canoes) out to the sea during the Northern land wars. The remains of the original settlement could still be seen with the shape of the Pa on the hill, and the flattened land of the settlement, and then the local Maori now had built a replica maori fishing village, complete with huts, food storage, all as it would have been built way back when. I also took a short walk out to a waterfall, and ran into another lady who was completing in the World Masters (the big tournament that the sports teams on our boat had been from.) I left Kerikeri a tad later than planned, and flicked through my camping app to find a place to sleep. In the interest of starting with the worst, I picked a free camp site out North West, reviews said it was in a lovely location but only had a toilet and there was some issue involving a river? Turned out the river was between the camp site and the toilets. Fortunately it was quite shallow and in one of my stocking up shopping trips I'd bought Gumboots (wellies). I think I was the only person on site using the bathrooms, so at least they were clean!
