I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to do a lesson today with the 7th grade classes at the middle school where I’m doing my library school internship (in the U.S.), so I created this presentation/assignment (doable in 45 min. with no background knowledge necessary) to mark the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Great East Japan Earthquake (3.11).
Please feel free to work through it yourself, or borrow it to use with or without credit in your own educational setting. Of course I’d appreciate hearing about it you or someone you know does use it, but I’d just be happy if it could be of use to a wider audience. Would also work well as a digital/remote lesson.
That said, please do not use for commercial purposes.

Kesennuma City in Miyagi Prefecture
MASATOSHI SAKAMOTO : PHOTOGRAPHS
How does a coastal community defend against a 1,000-year tsunami while preserving its connections to the sea? The author, a local politician and former journalist, recounts Kesennuma’s seven-year quest for solutions.
The picturesque coastal town of Kesennuma in Miyagi Prefecture offers an example of the difficulties tsunami-affected communities face in guarding against future tidal waves while keeping their connection with the sea.
