'Hecate' was Col. Stephens' largest engine. Custom ordered from Hawthorne Leslie (Stephens' regular loco supplier - evidently more willing then Peckett) in 1904. She was an 0-8-0T, the largest ever seen on a light railway - and was bought in anticipation of the Kent & East Sussex Company's extension to the town of Maidstone. It would be a steeply graded line with, one hoped, a good volume of traffic. The extension got as far as the village of Headcorn in 1905, but no further. With no work for her, 'Hecate' became a white elephant. Barred from the original R.V.R. line, on account of her weight (she was rather phat) she was stuck on a once-a-week round trip working to Headcorn, to keep her in order. She visited the East Kent Railway for a while in the late 19-teens, and there did some useful work shunting coal wagons at Tilmanstone - but eventually the K.E.S.L.R. decided that owning her was ridiculous - and sold her to the Southern in 1932 along with three old coaches in exchange for an ancient 'Saddleback' 0330 Class tank engine, two bogie coaches, and some spares for the 0-6-0ST. The Southern did well out of the exchange - they repainted her, numbered her 949 (keeping her name) and it worked very successfully out of Nine Elms shed on shunting work, until 1950. She might have worked longer, however she was in an accident that year which bent her frame, and the Southern Region of BR did not consider it worth their time to repair her.
