30 Days of Character Development
What might your character’s ideal romantic partner be?
Someone who shares her interest in learning and understanding, who has a good heart and isn’t xenophobic. Must also be willing to travel! Kétyé isn’t one for sitting in place too long. Other than that she isn’t really very picky.
Describe your character’s hands. Are they small, long, calloused, smooth, stubby?
Very slender, rather long, probably a bit bony, callouses on her palms, chews her nails and cuticles.
Second day of favorites! Favorite comfort food, favorite vice, favorite outfit, favorite hot drink, favorite time of year, and favorite holiday.
Mother’s roast, sweets, a simple cotton dress with a sash around the waist and long sleeves, tea, autumn, The Celebration of Creation which takes place three weeks after the first day of spring.
Pick two songs that describe your character at two different points of their life, and explain why you chose them.
uuugh I don’t know I’m not good with songs. Jfkldas I hate this question, fyi.
Bridge Over Troubled Water- Simon and Garfunkel
This one is very significant towards the relationship Kétyé has with Ĵéqát, her closest friend for a large part the first few years since her banishment. She feels very lost but he provides a great deal of comfort and support in his own way, telling her to carry on and be strong no matter what and not to doubt her inner strength as she so often does. He may sound pretty mushy, but in reality his demeanor is rather distant, even if they share a great deal of love he never really relays that closeness in words. He’s like a big brother who can’t really say “Hey kid, I love you” but he proves it in other ways. So he is very much a bridge on her journey through life, especially since they inevitably part ways.
Won’t Get Fooled Again- The Who
This song applies fairly well to Kétyé’s opinion on the war that begins during her young life. At first she doesn’t know what to believe, since she is so inexperienced with the world outside of what her village was, but the more she is exposed to the species engaged in the conflict the more she sees how similar they all are. The main reason for the war is power over others; no matter what other reasons those fighters tack onto the war, that’s all it is and she soon realizes this. As she studies those around her more she also sees that the buildup to this outcome was long in the making and inevitable. She becomes a neutral agent, switching sides as often as necessary to stay alive since no matter who wins the end result will likely be the same: continuing strife and oppression of those viewed as lesser. She will do what she needs to avoid harm, she won’t be naïve like she was as a child, she sees the world as it is, changing yet at the heart ever the same, and she adjusts as she must.
