Snow drought
Whether you call it a cycle, or a blip, or an aberration or climate change (which is what you should call it), you have to admit something's happening.
Or not happening, depending on how you look at it, The thing that's not happening is snow. Michigan's Upper Peninsula is, it seems, losing one of its claims to fame.
This snowmometer, on M-140 in Mohawk, is a little hard to read from this angle, but the take-away here is that snowfall in Keweenaw County last year was the least it's ever been since they started keeping records.
The plaque next to the guage commemorates the winter of 1978-79, when the county got 390.4 inches of show. The 54-year average is about 240 inches. Last year the total was about 170 inches.

Central Mine Historic District, Upper Peninsula, MI. The The Keweenaw County historical area covers the remains of the nearly abandoned mining town of Central. The village was clustered around the mine at the base of the cliff where a cemetery still exists across the west branch of the Eagle River.

Missing Boat: U.S. Coast Guard called in to assist locals off Portage area
The U.S. Coast Guard says it was just asked to assist in the search for a boat missing off the Copper Country

(Portage, MI) – A U.S. Coast Guard official confirms to U.P. Breaking News that the search for a boat is underway in Lake Superior off the Portage area in northern the U.P.
Emergency officials are responding enforce we have even heard mention of the Lac La Belle Area.
State and local officials have launched vessels – and are responding from the Baraga, MI Boat launch – including locals who have already mounted a search.
Its not clear how the long boat has been missing – we heard 11 o’clock but not sure if a.m. of p.m.
Also – there are reports that the boat was going to visit a “reef” in Lake Superior and has not been heard from since. Not sure if this means it involves divers, fishing or what purpose.
No word on the number of people involved aboard the missing boat.
We will post updates as we get them.
