dazai and the dark age but like everbody thinks oda and dazai are dating and they both just think theyre being broskis
this is hilarious. i don’t think there’s a lot of people who are aware they interact at all but ango, mori and perhaps even hirtosu would casually ask one of them how their significant other is doing only to be met with confused blinks.
i also think dazai might catch on to the fact that an assumption is being made about them but wouldn’t correct it because a) he likes it when mori is wrong about him, since, paraphrasing his own dialogue, the side with the most intel has the upper hand b) he knows oda wouldn’t appreciate the indirect attention if he acknowledged any rumours and finally c) being elusive enough to be the subject of other’s speculation makes for quite the thrill.
loathe the way they light candles in rome but love the sweet air of the votives. hurt and grieve but don’t suffer alone. engage with the pain as a motive

why do you like nikolai so much he isn't here for so long
i do like nikolai! there’s a few reasons why. one of them is that i relate to the version of him i’ve managed to create in my head. if you’ve read dazai osamu’s no longer human you will have noticed he talks about wearing masks. the character, the autobiographical stand-in for osamu if you will, plays the clown often because it’s easier to joke than to deal with raw, uncomfortable, unlayered reality without some sick spin on it. gogol appears in a mask and we don’t get to see his face until his fight with atsushi. if you joke around and learn the script, similar to how gogol has a silly rhetorical quiz shtick, then you can just espouse dialogue instead of actually learning how to behave like a human being imbued with context sensitivity and a moral compass. all of this would make me relate to dazai (whose attitude i am contrasting with gogol’s) on some level and while that may be true gogol resonates with me because he openly stands for a different approach to disqualification altogether. gogol doesn’t think a state of qualification or disqualification have any difference between them value wise. dazai, on the other hand sees his nonbeing as something explicitly lamentable. when gogol doesn’t fit the mould? yeah he doesn’t mind. to hell with it. why be a human being anyway? he’ll wear the mask only to take it off and put it on again. what difference does it make? he’ll admit he has feelings only to throw them aside and commit murder knowing he can and will feel guilt. sure he may be disqualified from humanhood and that hurts him but so does being a human being. it’s difficult and just as painful so how is one better than the other anyway? it’s best to simply do as one wishes because everything ultimately sucks. naturally doing what one wishes would also include actions that would lead to one’s disqualification from humanhood hence why gogol occupies this strange categorical space and it’s really difficult to call him a person just as it is difficult not to call him one. disqualification is then a kind of liberation. barring the fact that he sure has made use of his freedom in pretty convoluted ways that aspect of his character is what i love most.
and yes. all of this stands out just after the epic clown outfit of course.
a little foreword on the nature of all the canonical romantic relationships asagiri has written. they all have one thing in common. tragedy. or, if the character is shown mercy, unrequitedness. ranpo’s parents, kouyou’s deceased lover, naboku sasaki and the azure messenger, katai and gin, kyouka’s mother and father, officer sugimoto and yamagiwa, mitchell and hawthorne are just a few cases exemplifying this commonality. that being said, asagiri’s pattern is continued in my interpretation of these relationships so do keep that in mind! otherwise, list’s under the cut.
fyogol: great timing. if this ask was sent before i read the beast au the only reply here would be fyogol rights! and a heavily pixelated gogol edit. i got emotionally invested into them by accident lma0.
ranpoe: because poe is very transparent. excellent friendship too.
odazai: specifically following the beast au. if tragedy is common to all of the bsd romances than surely the same must apply to the ultimate doomed pair. beast showed us that their fates were not only completely dependent on each others but also that their suffering was embedded into the very fabric of the bsd canon. also, if you’d allow me to project onto dazai…i didn’t realize i was in love with my best friend until after they were gone and i feel like the same could be said for him. it’s a shame he won’t get a happy reunion. i should add the fact that they both got to share what is, in my opinion, the most poetic line in the entire series: “your mind dances.” any interpretation of odazai including a platonic one is great in my eyes too. i usually default to the platonic.
kousano: i know these two haven’t even met in canon but…their matching necklaces in mayoi…
akuatsu: from beast! this is more a testament to asagiri’s writing than anything else because their chemistry during their sugar conversation was formidable. their hatred in beast was entirely partisan and dazai removed that barrier for them at the end so the potential is definitely present. i also saw that as dazai’s twisted repayment for messing with aku in the original timeline and atsu in the beast one. the two of them also have to guard the secret of the book together for the rest of their lives and they compliment each other in every possible way. can you imagine them raising orphans with guidance from oda so no child should go through what they both did? because i sure can. beast akuatsu, best akuatsu. this is my comparatively wholesome ship in rebellion to asagiri’s track record.
that’s about it for now. thanks for reading and i’ll see you soon.
