The further in time he drifted, the more the ache for his era grew. Yet even so, he marveled at the way humans advanced. Cities these days were really something else; even a small town had plenty of places for him to seek cover from the sun, making it all the easier for him to continue surviving. Thriving, really.
Sure, there was a lack of stories being told. Creatures like him were a work of fiction these days rather than a tale of warning. Lucky for him, that sometimes meant others gladly ran towards his fangs instead of away from them. Funny, that. The constant yearning was at least balanced with frequent amusement.
Hands were shoved into his pockets as he strolled down the sidewalk one night, a broken hum coming and going as he observed people through the open windows or those scurrying back home. A few stragglers but he was satiated for now, having tried his version of this town's 'gas station food' behind the building some blocks back. Remmick learned the value of not making a mess these days, even if he'd really like to.
Speaking of mess... his head snapped into the direction of a familiar sound and sight - an orange glow in the sky. People that once were inside began creeping out, he heard their heartbeats flutter anxiously and their whispers of the house it must be.
'That girl and her mother...'
Oh? Well, satiated he may be but a vampire's hunger is never truly quelled. He could always eat more. Really, it was no different from when he was a lad and always stealing bites while tending to the farm. Some things just don't change.
Victims of a fire could use his sort of mercy, he reckoned. Burns were something nasty to deal with, he knew, so he'd gladly speed along any damage done. The thought alone was enough to make him swallow down the saliva in his mouth.
What a sight, what a sight! It looked like the house outright collapsed for the most part. Flames were rising higher, the heat was intense even from a distance. Veering off the path and out of sight, he approached from the opposite side of the crowd and slipped into the wreckage that was once a home. There he found quite the sight. A burning body of an older woman and, surprisingly, an untouched girl. The flames were closing in on her and it seemed she had suffered being struck by debris at most.
Lucky her. Lucky him, too.
He crouched down, knowing well enough already she was alive. Her heartbeat was strong still. Good. "There, there." Remmick cooed softly and scooped her up into his arms before backing out the way he came. Just like that, he dipped away as if he was never there. A despite times having changed, he kept the southern twang to his voice for his own reasons.
The creature fled the scene, bringing her amidst the small woods between houses. His rear found a fallen tree as he settled the girl in his lap to cradle her in one arm. "C'mon, darlin'. Wake up for me. I need you to take in some of this here fresh air." He talked to her, one hand tapping at her cheek gently in hopes of rousing her.
