Stede's instrument (shorter this time)
After my earlier post on the melodeon that Stede has in his captain's quarters, I've seen a couple more piano-related questions around:
1) Is it possible that Stede owns a square grand piano instead? I didn't really cover them in my initial post. Square grand pianos were the most popular piano shape from the mid-1700s to the mid-1800s, but then fell out of favor so hard that most people today don't really know they existed. They're similar in appearance to the melodeon, but much bigger. Gotta have room for those strings! They also tend to have their keyboards off to one side, like a clavichord.

You can see that this square piano is much too bulky to be what Stede has in his quarters. The pedals are nowhere near the back of the instrument because it's got so much depth, the keyboard is off to one side, and it's just CHONKY in general. It's also a full 88 keys; five-octave instruments seem to be much rarer (possibly earlier models before the range was standardized?) and look even more like clavichords. They certainly don't look like OFMD's model. We can definitely rule out square pianos! Melodeon is still the winner here.
2) Also, what's the deal with the thing that gets dropped on Corpse!Stede in episode 10? Is that a piano, or something more weird and interesting?
You mean this:
Well, it looks like a pretty standard upright piano to me! An anachronism, of course, but what else is new in the OFMD world? I guess to be absolutely certain we'd want to see that it had the full set of hammers inside--
Ah. Okay. Ouch. So--yeah, mate. That's a straight-up piano. :)
