I have an extreme weakness for the whole idea of using someone you loved against you, and it's not like Roy doesn't have things to be held against him! And I think Roy would agree to most of those things that could be held against him!

And Hughes would be the perfect one to do it, Hughes who believed in Roy and was willing to back his belief that if only he were Fuhrer*, he could fix everything. I personally happen to think that is a fucking insane thought, but, I guess any port in a storm, and it was the thing that convinced Roy living was worth it, and I don't think more death is the answer to a horrific problem even if I think Roy's answer lacks something in the execution. I have other suggestions. ANYWAY.

Envy is MEAN AS FUCK. Clearly, none of the Critters are winning Miss Congeniality here, but Envy has a special level of specific malice, and if we assume *remembers to go put spoiler thing on top of the post* that Ed is going to have to fight Pride--again, as I was telling Jetty there's always a difference between what I want a show to do, and I what I assume a show will do, and just because it's not what I want doesn't mean it'll be necessarily bad--then I would assume Roy is going to have to tangle with someone of the other Critters, and Envy would be a great one FOR this. Because Ed will already get to face off with the violence he did a loved one in Sloth, so I would love to see Roy have to face the same thing in Envy.

Could he do it? Could he kill Hughes, even knowing it's not Hughes, really? This would actually be a really great moment to give me something I have been fucking begging the show for but in all seriousness had been lacking in a LOT of ways: Showing Roy's feelings about Hughes. I know he had a real bad time at the funeral, and I did love that, but one of my criticisms of the show is that we're meant to believe in this deep friendship they refuse to give us a lot of ballast for. Even in tiny ways! But this could be chance for us to actually do something with that, especially if he CAN'T, or at the very least has a MAJOR struggle with it and has a terrible time doing it. I would rather see Hawkeye or even Ed have to be the one that did it because Roy can't, but I'll make what I can get knowing that at the end of the day we must show Roy to be a Cool Guy

God, I am LUXURIATING in the thought of all the terrible things Envy would say to Roy in Hughes' voice, and he can say to himself as many times as he wants that it's not real, It's not real, but it feels so fucking real!

*I cannot TELL you how bad I do not want Roy to become Fuhrer. I'm not sure "Military with a country attached" is a better deal if the leader is nice. I don't know that I think you can HOLD a position like that and maintain decency. But ultimately my rejection of the idea is not so much "I like Roy" (and I do, but I don't need canon to kiss my ass) but more, "I feel like this show is saying that military involvement will press you to do things you could never imagine yourself doing" which is a pretty solid theme that some adults can't handle, but also I'm not sure, if Roy stays a "character we are meant to feel for" that just swapping him in for a naughty really serves that end. I dunno, I do have some trust in the show so I'm willing to hear it out, but.

I'm sorry, did you say there's a guy on Lego Masters named Brickman?

I did indeed! Ryan "Brickman" McNaught is a Lego certified professional from Australia. He designs and builds really epic Lego (and Duplo) models. An exhibition of them came to Auckland Museum this past summer and we took Little Nephew and had a Grand Day Out. I mean, you know how you see someone's TV manner and they just seem really sincere and kind and like a good teacher and you can only hope they are not a secret arsehole so you can go on admiring them? He doesn't just judge the competition, he gives the contestants usable advice while they're building - by comparison, the two judges on the US Lego Masters are unhelpfully vague in their feedback, giving clichés like "we just wanted to see more from you" instead of really explaining what "more" would be, whereas he'll say things like "you need to manage your time better because while parts of this build are great, other parts look unfinished and hasty (pointing out examples of both)." If he thinks a team are on the wrong track he goes and talks through their idea with them to keep them focused on the theme and point out any pitfalls he sees. There have been a few times when someone had an idea he didn't think was going to work but they did it anyway and it turned out well, and because he is a good teacher he doesn't mark them down for not following his advice, he commends them for pulling it off and surprising him. And he gets teary-eyed when he has to send people home. I just really like Brickman, I think he's good.

I do not follow the Mobby Psycho, but am intensely curious as to the significance of FLOWERS, so I thought I'd make a twofer by a) asking and b) giving you the opening to gush.

OH JET, WE'RE REALLY IN IT NOW.

So we finally got confirmation of Mob Psycho 100 anime season three today after a 100 day countdown on twitter teasing it (STUDIO BONES DOES LOVE ITS MOB AND THUS DECIDED TO BE EXTRA ABOUT IT), and the key visual released confirms basically that the third, and likely final, season will cover the rest of the already completed manga story.

The flower bouquet Mob is holding is very significant in the final arc of the story and THAT IS ALL I WILL SAY AS ANYTHING MORE WILL BE BIG SPOILER TOWN, BUT REST ASSURED THAT WE ALL HAVE A BIG STORM COMIN'.

I've been up for a while, but my brain is clearly still in bed. So Tumblr tossed me one of those "DID YOU MISS THIS??!?" posts, and it was from one of your liveblogs. I felt you needed to know that the first cap has the subtitle "Lan Zhan!" I completely and unquestionably read it as "Land's End!" and didn't question it for a good ten, fifteen seconds.

This (a) makes my whole entire day, and (b) makes me want to imagine a super prep-school/country club AU where all the cultivators wear polo shirts and Meng Yao is ostracized because he shops at The GAP.

Live action TV: Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories A very chill, relaxing episodic show about a cook, a diner, and the lives of the people he comes into contact with.

Farscape: Do you like comedy? Do you like Sci-fi? Do you like muppets? Do you like Claudia Black? If you answered yes to any of these, you should vote for Farscape.

Kanpai Senshi After V:  A hilarious parody of Super Sentai, that you don’t need to have an encyclopedic knowledge of super senpai to enjoy. The cast plays off each other well, and the timing on the jokes is almost always perfect.

Anime:

A Place Further than the Universe: A wonderful show about female friendships, spite as a motivator, and never giving up on your dreams. Probably one of the best new anime of the last five years.

Aggretsuko: Because sometimes we all need a way to vent. A lot of venting. Great show, good humor, and it gets surprisingly real at times. Sweetness & Lightning: A wonderful show, and one of my ‘happy place’ anime that I can put on to destress. I would love for Jet to take another look at it, now that the initial premise is clear.

Non-anime cartoon:

Epithet Erased: One of the best new little shows I’ve seen in a long time, I was kicking myself that I didn’t nominate it. Funny, with some clever writing and gimmicks, it’s also free on youtube with closed captioning, to make this easy for everyone! Hilda: A well written female protagonist, and gorgeous, almost water color style animation with neat creature designs. There’s nothing not to love about this cartoon.

Movies:

Cats (1998): Because Jet deserves to see this musical actually preformed and sung and acted...and pretty much everything else well.

Tokyo Godfathers: A wonderful movie, the last movie done by director Satoshi Kon, it’s full of heartwarming moments, drama, comedy, and more. A good way to end the holiday season.

Video Games:

Disco Elysium: An RPG that is the true spiritual successor to Planescape Torment and other games where talking and conversation reveal the story, there’s really not much I can say about this game without spoiling it, other then failure is not the end of the game.

Baba is You: A fun little puzzle game that’s sure to get Jet thinking, and possibly cursing. Mostly thinking hopefully. Plus, it’s got really cute graphics.

Yakuza 0: I personally love this game. It’s a great action RPG with deep mechanics, an interesting story, and wild setting of Japan during the 80s.

Firewatch: A wonderful ‘walking simulator’ set in a beautiful National Park. You can’t go wrong with it.

Monster Prom:  Mostly because I want to see Jet try to do a bunch of different voices in a weird, strange little game.

Hatoful Boyfriend: Because at this point, Jet should just give up and have one day of the Giftening dedicated to pigeons and the copulation of them.

So via a random chain of events (a post from her Gravity Falls liveblog was rb’d by a Jem blog I follow, I went to that and on one post she mentioned also doing Utena) I discovered Jet Wolf’s Utena liveblog. She’s only to episode nine or so, so it was safe for me to read, and I stayed up way too late last night giggling hysterically. She’s a lot more shitposty than I am and is hilarious. So, y’know, if you wanna go laugh your head off check her out.

OK, I’mma make my pitch for @keyofjetwolf ‘s Giftening.  You may not agree with my reasons, or care about this at all, but I’m gonna put in my opinion.

Anime

Glitter Force - For those who don’t know, this is the official English “adaptation” of Smile PreCure.  And that fact brings me to the reason for this, a question: is it possible to give Jet Wolf a nostalgia trip to 90s Sailor Moon without it being Sailor Moon?  Because this right here?  It’s got a quality of adaptation not too far off (the voice acting is a bit better, but that’s it).  Which means you’ll get to enjoy changed names and lines as the show tries so very hard to pretend it isn’t Japanese, episodes cut because reasons, dialog inserted into the transformation sequences because we can’t let the kids go too long without something being said or they might get bored, and attacks suddenly having a dark filter placed over them juuuust in case they might be too bright and flashy and cause seizures (never mind that the show had already aired without problems).  But of course the best reason to watch this is to see the villains make use of the most threatening thing in existence to destroy humanity: TUMBLR DARK FICS!!!

Hamtaro - Yeah, this one was just a gag suggestion.  But consider this.  Our lives are stressful.  If there’s anytime we need senseless cuteness delivered by a hamster, it’s now.

Non-anime

Courage the Cowardly Dog - there are some episodes here I think it would be great to see Jet Wolf react to.  Like seeing if she thought Freaky Fred was funny or deeply disturbing.  Or Masks, to see what kind of character connections she would make.

Rugrats - gag suggestion, feel free to ignore.

Live Action

Batman (Adam West) - I didn’t suggest this, but I kinda wish I had.  Adam West is the best Batman and I will not hear otherwise!  This caped crusader is the hero the Giftening needs!

The Tick (2016) - I was surprised how this show managed to be both funny and touching.  It’s got an absolutely great Arthur.  A must watch.

Games

Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky - Estelle is the greatest JRPG hero of all time!  But beyond that I really enjoyed the setting, the characters, and the plot.  And the Second Chapter had a great message too.  No chance in heck she’s getting through 2 60-hour RPGs to get to that message, but you gotta start somewhere.

Wild ARMs XF - Clarissa is another great protagonist, and this game does interesting things with a tactics RPG class system.  That and I’ve always enjoyed the way this series is in love with dramatic speeches.  This game isn’t even the best example of that.  If you think things get silly in this game you should see Wild ARMs 4, that game has an evil Greek chorus!

Sailor Moon Day

Another Story - I’ll freely admit that the writing and gameplay in this aren’t the best.  But there are two game-original villains I really want to see Jet Wolf’s opinions on.  They are glittering, fascinating diamonds in a rough licensed game.

Mr. Tsukino Does His Taxes and the Household Budget - this thing is hilarious.  Jet Wolf needs to see it.  As do all of you.  Plus, you know, it’s pretty dang short so it wouldn’t eat up too much time.

Misc.

Jet Wolf’s Figurines Act Out Shakespeare - if you can’t see the comedy potential here I don’t know what to say to you.  As I’m far more a fan of comedy my personal preferences for the plays would be either Measure by Measure or Twelfth Night.

ANIME

Luck & Logic- An action fantasy anime based on a trading card game of the same name, Luck & Logic follows the goings-on of a special police force tasked with protecting the world from otherworldly beings.

Sweetness and Lightning- You know it, you seemed to enjoy it heartily last time. Please?

NON-ANIME

The Dragon Prince- Beautiful art style, amazing characters, and an interesting setting. I kinda fell in love with this one from the moment I first saw it.

She-Ra (2018)- So. Freaking. Good. The new show takes what was good about the original and makes it better, while fixing some of the more ‘ehhh’ bits that were standard of 80s cartoons.

LIVE ACTION

Critical Role (The Night Before Critmas)- Witness as Liam hops into the DM chair for a delightful Christmas-themed adventure. Hijinks and plot twists the likes of which could only come from the CR cast ensue.

FILM

Cats (1998)- Because everyone deserves to see this musical as it’s meant to be seen. Not the uncanny valley nightmare fuel that Tom Hooper shat out.

Newsies (1992)- The musical that got me into musicals. Historical accuracy be damned, it’s a fun show with good songs and beautiful costumes.

GAMES

Little Inferno- A lovely, simplistic little game with a beautiful soundtrack (I’d happily go so far as to say that Little Inferno has some of the prettiest music I’ve heard in a game in a while) and an art style that’s reminiscent of a Henry Selick movie

The 7th Guest- My favorite game of all time. Mystery, spoops, puzzles. A classic point-and-click
