     yumi watched him, eyes happily wide. she was just going home from a too-short day of biking around the town, but what was one more pitstop to drop someone off?      as he approached her bike, she sat up straight. she gripped the handles with pride. she laughed at his hesitation.      “do you think i put these rear pedals on just for show? that’d be totally lame! hop on, guy!” she waited for him to just grab her shoulders so that she could go, but, instead, she was forced to be left waiting.      “uh, yeah, i don’t think you’ll be too heavy. just get on already! where are you going anyway? actually! wait! don’t tell me. well, i mean, you totally can tell me, but, i’m totally, like, new to this town- i just got here, for, uh, a little vacation. i don’t know where anything is, i know you probably do,” she spoke forward. she briefly wondered if she should tie her long hair up before they took off. “but, like, anyway- you can totally just tell me where to go, like, left and right and stuff? if you know how to get home i can get us there, guy!”

jiyeon had to admit that the food stalls available were quite impressive. despite this, there were a few that failed to draw as much of a crowd as others. “it would be such a shame for them to go unnoticed.” she murmured to herself, pondering on a solution for just a moment. taking the time to survey the crowd, jiyeon decided to approach an unfamiliar face who appeared to be browsing through the stalls on their own.

“good afternoon! might i suggest sampling one of the snacks here. they’re considered one of yunhwa’s signature delicacies.”

“haven’t you see jaws?!”

eunbi laughs, “there’s not gonna be any sharks in shallow waters.” she says, an amused smile on her face. she heaves her cooler along with them as they walk closer to the shore, “besides you should have thought of that before you agreed to come with me to the beach.” she giggles. “if it helps i think the water is gonna be too cold to go in anyway. at least we’ll get some sun and have a nice lunch in the meantime.” 

she grins, pointing at the various shells, “and look! there’s treasure to hunt. i can’t wait to make them into earrings and jewelry.” her eyes sparkle at the possibilities, a small spring in her step as she walks further towards the shore. she picks a good spot, setting the cooler down, “i think we can set up the umbrella here. i made all of this food this morning so hopefully you like it. it’s some of my favorites.” she grins, laying out a blanket for them to sit on.

“hardware store? for what?”

“i’m so glad you asked, because i was just thinking i was gonna need some help.” jonghyuk smiles, hooking his arm with keyu and pulling him along quickly. “i want to hang some shelves, but i wanna get special hooks to hang them, so i need to make a quick trip to the hardware store for some supplies.” he grins happily, “and you’ll be there to help me hang them.” 

the tall man was plenty capable of hanging the shelves on his own, but he would never give up an excuse to have someone hang out with him. “i’ll even buy you pizza, as a reward for your hard work. though i think being in my presence is probably reward enough. so really, you’re getting a double reward.” he jokes, tugging him along and through the store entrance. “i think they’re in aisle 3.”

"are you drunk? hey -- you can’t be walking around like that, be careful!"

yoogeon usually knows how to have a good time when alcohol is involved. usually. ever since the funeral and having to make a temporary home of room number 2 at yeyun inn, alcohol hasn't held the same meaning or use for him. he's heard the quiet and pitying mutters of the elders sitting outside the convenience store for their daily drinks when they'd see yoogeon appear to buy more soju to get through the night. all the whispers about how hard he must be taking his grandfather's death and handling everything alone.

it was very much the opposite though. handling everything by himself wasn't much an issue either considering yoogeon did everything alone a lot. simply a bit of nuisance. what the alcohol truly served as, was not exactly a failsafe solution for lifting his moods while being stuck in town.

he had been tired though of hearing the old men talk about him like he couldn't hear them. of feeling their eyes trailing on him from the moment he arrived to the moment he left. so despite the preference of drinking alone he had decided to spend his evening drinking at mokjawon tavern.

it was supposed to be a simple night with one to two drinks. however, leaving himself to drink alone while brooding about his situation was definitely a mistake. yoogeon certainly had more alcohol in his system than planned and he could barely walk in a straight line. in fact, he couldn't really even walk. he was sure he had dropped his keys over ten times now stumbling down the street to where he had parked his car.

he was in no condition to drive back to the inn but there was no way he'd spend the night making the trek back to his grandfather's house to rest. so his best option was to sleep in his car. if he could even get to his car.

so when yoogeon hears a stranger call out to him, he doesn't hesitate to respond for help rather answer their question - knowing his physical state was enough of an answer itself.

"hey- can you...."

another round of stumbling.

"can you help me to my car?"

yoogeon is sure he's dropped his keys again but his focus is on the stranger now.

"it's down.. the block...? somewhere."

a nod. he’d only caught onto the tail end of their conversation, but it’s enough to get a good idea of what happened - and he recognizes the type. it’s all too familiar (though quite usually he’s the one observing on the other side of things, with his father discussing offers and nudging him to watch closely). “it might not be my place, but if she’s turned down all of that, do you think the money really matters to her? if money is all you have to offer, it might be better for you to invest your time somewhere else,” he tells them quietly, setting down the bill he had fetched, and he dips his head into a bow. “thank you for coming to yunhwa inn.”

retreating from the table, he turns his gaze towards sira. he’s never heard her sound so firmly annoyed before, but it makes sense - if there’s anything that he’s realized over the past weeks of working here it’s that sira loves this place with strength. “does that happen a lot?” he asks in a worried hush.

she goes to takes a seat at the couch where the teahouse meets the inn, a sigh escaping her the second her back hits the rest. she doubts herself for the briefest moment, wonders if maybe the inn really would be better off commercialized. investors do have the money after all to pour into the place—maybe they could finally upgrade every single bed, table, and chair with newer, fancier models—advertise not only to the residents of korea but also to travelers overseas. but would they really put love into it, honor the long, rich history of yeyun and yunhwa? there’s no chance, not when the only things in their eyes are won signs.

she looks at keyu when he speaks and manages a tired, yet cheeky smile. “yeah, what can i say? this place is pretty damn great,” she says. “my family were seriously thinking ahead when they built this place here. investors are always saying how ideal it is for business with the hot springs and how close it is to the hiking trail and all.”

“i might not have a lot of money to invest into yeyun, at least not all at once, even though i think it deserves it,” sira continues, a distant almost forlorn glaze in her eyes. “but well, what was that one phrase you taught me the other day? bu pa man jiu pa ting?” she winces, sure that she’s butchered the pronunciation to hell and back. “don’t be afraid of growing slowly, only be afraid of standing still. i haven’t stopped thinking about it since you told it to me... even though i still can’t really say it right.”

“Are these guys bothering you?”

sira takes a deep, steady breath as she crosses her arms in front her. she had sparked a conversation with some businessmen who had rented out one of the rooms at yeyun which very quickly turned into them attempting to purchase the inn and the plot of land it occupies. it isn’t the first time she’s received an offer like this, and honestly, it’s starting to become a nuisance. 

“look, i appreciate your patronage and your interest in this inn,” her tone firm, borderline annoyed as she speaks to them, “but my answer is final. yeyun has been run by my family for multiple generations, and i have no intentions on ever selling it, no matter how much you offer.”

keyu’s voice catches her ear, and she glances at the boy with a brief expression of relief. “ah, keyu,” she says. “would you help ring these gentlemen up? i believe they’re finished with their meal.”
