Karasuno Game Adventures - Chapter 1: Where the heck are we?
Welcome to the first chapter of my newest idea: The Karasuno Game Adventures! *shitty fanfare noises*
For spoiler purposes, I will not be disclosing that much information here, as it will all be featured in the story at some point. What you need to know before heading into the first chapter is, that the Karasuno volleyball team has been surprised by a storm and mysteriously transported to somewhere else.
For additional information and if you want to leave a suggestion for characters and/or games, I suggest you visit this intro post.
Thank you for reading!
Pairing: None (yet :P)
Content Warning: Nothing serious. One slight mention (one sentence) of ch*king on something, otherwise this is pretty tame.
Nausea is all Hinata felt for a second. His body was being moved by something unfamiliar, like a method of transportation that was so foreign it made him shiver in discomfort. The orange-haired boy felt himself being flung somewhere, but he had no control over anything.
Am I dead?
Before he could figure out what was happening to him, he fell unconscious again, only regaining it briefly halfway through the journey, where he could see a black and white creature taking care of him. But before he could learn their name, he fell back into darkness.
When he woke up, he was somewhere else. It felt like he had been completely depleted of energy only to regain his health shortly after. Nothing made sense anymore, especially when Hinata finally managed to open his eyes again, taking in the new surroundings.
What is this place?
He didn’t see anything immediately, as his view was still a little blurry, but the sheer amount of vibrant colours was already indicative of the fact that this was not the volleyball hall anymore.
A bad storm had caused volleyball practice to be cut short. Daichi had wanted everyone to return home safe before it could get worse, but unfortunately for the team, the storm rolled around much faster than expected, surprising them when they had just finished cleaning up the gym hall.
Daichi had urged everyone to rush home, staying in pairs if they could, but before they could even attempt to run, the sky had started swirling and before the lightning could come crashing down, Hinata had lost consciousness.
Wherever he ended up now, it was unlike any place he knew. In the distance, Hinata could see a very large tree surrounded by some sort of blue hue with white flowers in front. The view was beautiful but also strangely haunting.
“Where…. where am I?” Hinata muttered, pain shooting through his whole body. Getting up was his first priority, but after he stood on his two legs, the ground was way closer than usual. He had always been the short one, but this? This was new.
“Wait. What am I?”
Looking down, the decoy realized he was in fact not in his own body anymore. Unless his body had morphed into whatever he was now. He glowed with the same ethereal white that the flowers had and while he was still a bipedal being, he could see hooves. He felt horns on his head and new ears that felt weird, especially since he was able to fully control them. And he had a tail!
It took a while for the middle blocker to get used to his new form. At least this body didn’t hurt anymore. It was lighter than Hinata was used to, which enabled him to jump far and high.
It was clear that Hinata couldn't stay there. Even if he still didn’t know what was happening and how to get back to his usual body, standing around would probably not lead him to any answer. Looking in one direction, he could see vines with nasty looking thorns that would likely hurt him immediately.
Not really willing to test that theory, Hinata looked over to the only other path he could take. Whatever magic had transported him here kept him on a singular path with no way to directly cross over to the tree that stood majestically in the distance. It was mostly covered with the same spiky vines anyways.
The way forward was dark and somewhat gloomy, but Hinata gave himself courage, knowing he could overcome anything if he only believed in himself. The thorny vines were everywhere, but with a little bit of careful jumping, he managed to evade them enough to progress.
A few steps farther, a name showed up, signaling the arrival in a certain part of the world called Sunken Glades.
“This must be the beginning of this story. I’m in a game, aren’t I?”, he whispered, still not used to the way his voice sounded in this small body. For some reason, he sounded much more transparent than usual. It was hard to explain and even harder to understand.
But even though darkness and thorns had taken over the forest, it still had a beauty to it that could not compare to anything Hinata knew. Moving on, he found an energy cell and was able to save his progress, which only cemented the idea that this was a game of some sorts. The beautiful world alone made him want to experience it and he knew that his situation was unique, a gift. Being able to experience a world like this was something no one else would get to do.
Saving created a soul link, which was a bright blue light that flickered like a small fire but was cool to the touch. Curiously, Hinata stuck his hand inside of it, but nothing happened. His hand was unharmed and the world around him stayed the same. It was a little disappointing if he was honest.
Jumping down some logs and parkouring over more spiky vines, he came across the first creature besides himself. It looked like some sort of rhino and while it was as tall as Hinata, it was way larger in size, moving on four legs.
“Hey! Could you tell me where I am?”, he asked, determined to make a friend in this foreign world. But to his surprise, the creature didn’t answer, opting instead to take a more forceful approach. The orange-haired middle blocker barely managed to jump in time to avoid the creature charging into him with full speed.
“Woah, hey! I’m friendly! No need to attack me!”, he yelled, dodging to the side yet again, trying to find a way out of the danger zone. The creature’s shell looked hard as stone and Hinata was not particularly interested in cuddling with this thing that apparently wanted him dead.
“Shit, it’s fast!”, Hinata exclaimed, jumping once more, trying to figure out how to beat this thing without weapons. He was closed in, two walls on either side with no way to get back to where he came from.
Looking back the way he came from and comparing it to where he would’ve wanted to go, Hinata finally noticed a blue shimmer that hadn’t been there before. His brain went into overdrive and after a few seconds that felt like hours, he finally realized what the game wanted him to do.
Dodging yet another charge, Hinata rushed to the blue wall, stopping right next to it. He had to wait for the right moment, otherwise he’d be coming down as the creature rushed in. But he should also not wait too long, as he’d risk getting charged into the wall.
Using all his focus, Hinata watched the enemy like a hawk, calculating the exact moment he would need to jump. Putting all the energy his little body had into his legs, he quite literally yeeted himself upwards, turning in the air and watching the creature slam into the wall, breaking it apart and getting crushed under the rubble.
Hinata didn’t land correctly, he all but crashed into the floor himself, letting out a painful grunt. But the way was now opened and he could move on.
“Hopefully I won’t need to do that again…”
Heaving himself up, he checked to see if he had any injuries. His fur was soft and he could see no blood, but what if the creature he was now didn’t bleed red? What if he was bleeding and just didn't notice?
A deep voice startled him out of his increasingly dreadful thoughts. He had just pressed on, trying to get through this game no matter the cost. The language he heard was foreign to him, but only for a moment, until he suddenly understood every word, as if that had always been his native tongue. It would have confused him deeply, but considering the fact that he was in a game, in a different body than his own, that circumstance could safely be tucked away under ‘weird magical stuff’.
Still moving on, Hinata listened to what he was told. It was here that he finally learned his own name, having missed it before. Ori. That was the name of the creature whose body he was borrowing. This was, supposedly, the hero of this story. And according to the mysterious voice, he had just found something important. Glancing ahead, he suddenly found a light source, lying on the ground, unmoving.
“This must be what the voice meant”, Hinata mumbled, carefully but curiously moving closer in an attempt to gauge the danger level this thing posed. Luckily enough, the light neither moved nor attempted to establish contact. It was simply a ball of light, very tiny and very fragile looking.
Until he attempted to pick it up.
As soon as his white paws had lifted the object, it started glowing brighter, releasing a shockwave of light. Hinata quickly lifted his arms to shield his eyes and his body, but the light was gone as quickly as it had come. Slowly lowering his arms again, he noticed the ball of light floating in front of him, seeming a little too alive for his tastes.
“My strength… is returning…”
It took a while for Hinata to process that the light had just spoken, but it did not seem to care much for that.
“I am Sein, the light and the eyes of the Spirit Tree”, it whispered, floating down as if to bow slightly. Not knowing how to respond to that, Hinata just returned the bow, waiting for more information. The orb did not disappoint.
“I was lost in this glen when she loosened her grip. I can guide you on your journey, if you allow me to come.”
“I would like that. My name is Hina- I mean, Ori”, he quickly corrected himself. It might not have mattered too much, but just in case, he decided to use the given name that the game would recognize. He still didn’t know what kind of magical force had transported him here and if it meant keeping everything stable and safe, choosing a new name for the duration seemed like a small prize.
“It is nice to meet you, Ori. But be still, can you hear that? They must have followed you here!”, the light warned.
Hinata almost wanted to ask what Sein meant by “her” and “they”, but he had no time to think about that as new creatures appeared. Inspecting them more closely, they seemed to be a mixture of a monkey and a frog and much like the rhino, they did not seem too friendly.
But this time, he was outnumbered. He would not get away with a wall stunt like before anymore. This time, he had to fight.
Balling his hands into fists, he charged towards the first creature, ready to swing, when Sein interrupted him.
“Ori! Use the spirit flame!”
“Great idea! … But how?”, Hinata questioned, stopping his charge just in time to dodge an attack.
“Think about it! Channel your thoughts and use my power to fight!”
What the hell does that mean?
Oh, how he wished he had any sort of controller now. This would probably be way easier if you could just punch a button to attack. But here, he would have to rely on his innate power alone. Taking a few steps back to gain some momentum, Hinata charged forwards again, focusing all of his thoughts on Sein and their words.
But nothing happened.
Which led to him crashing into the creature, getting hurt on impact. Pain shot through his whole body like lightning, but it passed as quickly as it had come. Quickly, Hinata heaved himself up again, refusing to let that affect him too much. He could hear Sein talking again, but he didn’t hear the words. He only felt a tugging sensation, pulling at his very core.
Tapping into that sensation, he realized he could use it, too. And suddenly, while thinking about unlocking the power, Sein glowed brighter, firing off two small flames that glowed the same ethereal light that the orb itself was made out of. The monkey-frog-creature got hit and stumbled back, apparently hurt.
It didn’t take long for Hinata to defeat the creatures, panting heavily after the last one had collapsed to the ground, disappearing and leaving yellow orbs behind.
“That… was AWESOME!”, he yelled happily, exhilaration taking fear’s place. Sein flickered a little and Hinata could feel their amusement.
“‘Their lights shall return to me’, these words the Spirit Tree once said. In the glade past the caverns we’ll find him, there’s a path up ahead!”, the orb explained. But Hinata was not done expressing his happiness yet.
“Did you see me, Sein? I was all like ‘whoosh’ and then you were like ‘pew pew pew’! We’re such a good team, you and I!”, he exclaimed, grinning up at the light like a madman.
“Indeed. But we have no time to waste, Ori. We need to get to the Spirit Tree to save this world!”
“Right, sorry. On we go!”
Travelling back and using Sein to destroy some of the spiky vines, collecting a light shard and revisiting his soul link, Hinata chose his first ability of many: Quick Flame. This ability empowered Sein to fire off three burst of their spirit flame, making combat a little easier.
But the more he pressed on, the more enemies he encountered. It seemed like the game had hidden a lot of them before he had gathered Sein and with them the ability to shoot. But now that he could, travelling through the Sunken Glades proved a lot tougher than before.
Fighting his way through and clearing more spiky plants, the pair came across a weird structure. Sein, who had been closely following Hinata, suddenly flew towards it. Hinata could tell that Sein had some explanation ready and once he thought about it, it wasnt unusual for them to explain every single thing. This was, after all, still a game. A game where the player would need explanations to be able to understand what was asked of them.
And it certainly didn’t hurt to have information, that much was obvious.
“Spirit wells are ancient structures that were used to quickly traverse all of Nibel. The light of the spirit wells will also replenish your strength whenever you are weary.”
Alright, so it’s a quick travel and a health restoration system. Got it.
“Okay. Let’s quickly do that and then head out to find that spirit tree thing.”
He could feel Sein wanting to say something, but the orb stayed quiet, only flickering a little in response.
After a little exploration and way too many enemies, Hinata dropped down into some sort of cave. The further he got, the more he felt like something was calling him, drawing him nearer to whatever lurked in the dark.
He probably should have been more careful, but since Sein stayed silent, Hinata pushed forward when he suddenly heard the deep voice again. It was the same one that had told him his name before picking up Sein, telling him about the fate of other creatures. Hinata thought it irrelevant, but only until he could see another one like himself before him.
Curiously, he stepped closer, reaching out to touch but phasing right through the strange and yet somehow familiar body. There were others like him, other white creatures. Were they his family?
Leaving the vision behind and moving forward yet again, Hinata found himself at the base of a tree-like structure. Sein flew towards it, explaining to Ori that the Spirit Tree was the reason everything was alive in this forest. But when it called out to him, he didn’t come, leaving the tree vulnerable to an attack.
“Now these ancestral trees are all that's left behind. Come closer now and feel the light of Fil, the spirit inside.”
Hinata could hear the sadness in Sein’s voice. The light seemed to have known Fil and maybe even more of their kind. Stepping closer and carefully running his hand over the bark, he could see tiny veins of light embedded into the wood.
“Who were they?”
“Fil was a great climber, always found high atop some tree or mountain. They enjoyed the freedom of height and the wind around their body, always striving to go higher. This power will now be yours, Ori, once you connect with your ancestor’s spirit.”
Hinata nodded once, as if to convince himself. Closing his eyes, he called out to Fil, praying to him and begging the spirit to let him use their power. For a moment, everything remained the same. But suddenly, Hinata was picked up and spun around, receiving the light of the tree that now looked full of life where it had been wilting before. Briefly, he could hear what he assumed to be Fil’s voice, telling him to be brave and free, before he was gently lowered to the ground and released again.
Sein remained quiet, instead opting to float towards a nearby wall, prompting Hinata to try his new wall climbing ability. It was surprisingly easy to do and Hinata wished he could have this kind of stamina for volleyball. Sure, he was already a powerhouse when it came to almost everything in life, but not even feeling any sort of strain was wonderful.
Climbing out of the little cave and progressing further, Hinata couldn’t help but think about his friends. Would they be okay? Had the storm messed with their minds as well? It was hard to think about, as one question tried to resurface again.
Would he even be okay after all this? Who was to say that he’d wake up from this game again, back to his own body in his own world? Maybe this was the afterlife and not a game as he’d initially thought.
Shaking his head to rid himself of the thoughts, he instead called out to Sein.
“Thank you for staying with me. It’s nice to know I have a friend at my side.”
Sein seemed pensive for a moment, but Hinata could feel their connection humming with warmth.
“You are not alone, Ori. Together, we can overcome anything. Do not worry.”
Sein’s words calmed his raging mind at least a little. True, he still couldn’t tell whether or not he had a life to come back to, but until that moment would come, he had work to do.
And he wasn’t about to let negativity get the better of him!
“What the fuck did I get myself into this time?” Kei muttered, holding what he had immediately recognized as a whip with a bamboo handle. If he had to guess, he’d say he got thrown into some sort of weird Indiana Jones spin-off game. The whip that he held in one hand gave him the ability to perform a double jump. Kei was unsure how that worked, but he really could jump again.
That would be so nice to have on the court…
He had just walked through what he recognized as the tutorial temple, only to find himself in front of a statue of a god called Altec that was talking down to him. Apparently it needed rescue and the player was the one to bring him liberty. The blonde immediately didn’t like that god, especially since he could see so many temples he would need to run through.
Hopefully he wouldn’t have to complete everything.
In front of him was a structure that seemed to be a fountain of some sort, just not for water but rather a magical force. To his left and right stood four pillars, seemingly increasing in difficulty. However, he was only able to choose the one whip he had equipped. Towering behind the fountain-like structure was a large purple portal. Kei guessed that touching that would teleport him into the first temple, considering that it only opened after he took the whip from the pedestal.
Carefully, he stepped in front of the portal, viewing the swirling of the purple magic with calculated doubt. What would happen to him once he stepped foot into an actual temple? Would he get hurt by traps? Would he die or would he respawn back at the fountain?
The doubt that had already festered inside his mind only grew. Although Kei would never admit that, he was afraid. He didn’t know where he was or how he got there, the means of escaping were also unclear and the question whether or not he would ever get out of here remained in the back of his head to ensure he wouldn’t get a panic attack right there.
Oh how he’d wish Yamaguchi was here! Or anyone, for that matter. In this case, he might even have tolerated Kageyama or Hinata if that meant having someone to talk to. But he was alone.
Taking a deep breath, Kei uncrossed his arms and stepped closer to the purple portal. The swirling magic seemed… alive, somehow, if that was even possible. He hesitantly reached out, watching the magic dance around his fingers, travelling up his arm. It was cool to the touch and seemed to try to pull him in.
Turning his head, his gaze fell upon a woman who seemed to be just some sort of illusion. Her body glowed purple and she introduced herself as Una. Kei almost thought he’d be able to at least talk to someone here, but unfortunately, Una seemed to be only an illusion of a past adventurer. She could talk, yes, but her lines were crafted and she didn’t even notice his presence. It was like a tape, replayable and unchanging.
Under normal circumstances, Una’s insight into this temple would probably have been interesting, but to Kei it was useless rambling about something he just wanted to get out of. Which is why he turned back to the portal and finally stepped into it.
Immediately, the world around him warped, throwing him into a swirl of purple, black and white, his body being moved towards darkness. That in itself would have already been scary for the average person, but as soon as Kei hit that darkness, his vision faded and alongside that, he fell unconscious.
When he awoke again, he was in a temple, surrounded by other people, glowing a light blue. They also held whips and seemed to have traversed the temple before him.
But that wasn’t what immediately held his focus.
Vomiting behind a pillar was not how he imagined this to begin, but the teleportation had not gone as smoothly as he had hoped. He felt absolutely terrible, feeling what was left from his lunch trying to reappear in broad daylight. Forcing it back down was not an option, which is why he let his stomach empty itself on the temple floor before wiping his mouth with his sleeve, stumbling forward a little to get away from the mess.
At least I don't seem to have a time limit…
Lowering himself to the ground, Kei rested for a while to calm his still angry stomach before slowly and carefully walking through the first room. There was another one of the pools he had already seen before teleporting, but he walked past it. There was no need to experience whatever that magic did to his body again.
“I’m lucky I don’t panic much”, the blonde mumbled, approaching an edge with a seemingly limitless bottom and two platforms with chests. They had already been opened and what Kei thought to be money was spread around them. Moving closer, he collected the money without needing to do anything. The coins flew towards him, getting absorbed into his body.
This is so weird. Why do I have to do this?
Cursing his entire existence, Kei took a few steps back before sprinting forwards to cross the gap before him. He managed quite easily, surprising even himself. Maybe he could actually do this!
… is what he thought for exactly ten seconds, before his life became a living hell.
Spike traps, swinging hammers, pitfalls, statues shooting darts, flying bombs and some sort of weird floating heads that followed him as soon as they noticed him. And to make matters worse, there was a guardian in the temple. A giant, green head that was periodically shooting out balls of poisonous gas that exploded shortly after.
Luckily, he had his whip. It wasn’t just a basic defense tool, it functioned as a grapple as well. Aiming at a wall, he could crack his whip and basically get dragged to that spot. The first few times, Kei felt like he got whiplash from the sheer power behind that drag, but at some point he grew accustomed to it.
Stepping into the third room, however, had unleashed hell upon him, making him face situations that were so unlike anything he had experienced before. His lungs were burning by the fifth room, having to dodge and jump so much that he was already out of breath. How the hell did their decoy do this so easily?
Cursing the fact that Hinata of all people crossed his mind, Kei dove down, narrowingly avoiding getting slammed with one of the giant swinging hammers. But lying down for too long was not something he could risk, as the head already charged up its attack again. This time, he was too slow, not managing to avoid the poisonous gas that made him choke. Tears formed in his eyes, but he managed to push through.
Fortunately for him, the gas didn’t immediately end him, but rather took some of his health, letting him escape while gritting his teeth to lessen the residual pain. It stung, but it was nothing he couldn't take. If blocking Ushijima’s spike was in his repertoire, surviving a little stinging was certainly no big deal. Even if he'd like to avoid another encounter with the balls of doom, as he swiftly called them.
After a few more rooms filled with deathly traps, Kei managed to come across a room that shut its door behind him, giving him some much needed rest. He had taken a little more damage than he really wanted, having gone down to only one of his hearts. He would have to be careful to avoid running out of health. He would probably respawn upon death, but knowing how fickle magic could be, the blonde did not want to risk that.
The room that he was in now acted like a safe zone of sorts, being filled with only one chest and a smaller version of the Altec statue that would grant him temporary powers in exchange for money he collected in the temple. Fortunately for Kei, he managed to get three upgrades, which consisted of more health, wings that would let him slowly glide to the ground and a faster dash.
The blonde was mostly excited about the wings. Having to jump down from dangerously high places was not on his list of fun things, even if he managed to avoid damage by rolling over upon landing. Kei would never like literally yeeting himself off tall buildings though.
Walking down the stairs in front of him, he could see the next chamber awaiting. Apparently, this first temple consisted only of two, but it could go as high as twelve consecutive chambers he would all have to clear in one go with just the health he had.
Suddenly, being greedy and taking detours for all of the money chests didn’t sound like that bad of an idea, even if it meant more traps.
Stepping through the door and preparing himself for more trap shenanigans, he began to think about his volleyball team. Would they face the same challenges? Or had they been split into many different worlds?
I wonder where Yamaguchi ended up…
While he ran through the rest of the temple, thoughts about his friends and his own fate kept rising up like bile. It was not time that made him shove them back down, as he had plenty of it during rooms where the traps were either very scarce or didn’t force him to immediately take action. The guardian was annoying but ultimately just that. Careful thinking made avoiding it so much easier.
“I can’t wait to get out of this soon…”
Una’s lifeless, almost transparent body could be found in the last room of the temple and it was almost a calming sight after all that trouble. Of course, her body being there was more akin to a sort of memory ghost, replaying one specific point of the past over and over again. But to Kei, it was the sight of a familiar concept that he could at least pretend to talk to.
The woman talked about her insights about the temple and Altec himself, making clear that this was no simple temple. The civilization behind this was large and full of culture, and although Una’s ghost didn’t share much, Kei couldn’t deny being at least a little interested. But he figured he’d get to know the history behind this as long as he found Una’s ghost a few more times.
At the end of the final chamber were very large stairs that made Kei tired just by looking at them. Atop the stairs was a relatively small pillar holding a golden statue that resembled some sort of warrior holding something to its mouth. The general look matched the one of the dart statues that tried to kill him constantly, making it perfectly clear that this warrior belonged to the old civilization behind these temples.
The blonde could deny it no longer, he was fully immersed now. History and civilizations had always been an interest of him, to the point of wanting to pursue some sort of career in that field. Sure, he was mostly interested in dinosaurs and everything that belonged to them, but actively exploring what seemed to be a centuries old culture was… thrilling, to be completely honest.
Kei had seen weird symbols before and only now did he realize that he was probably witnessing a language he could not speak nor read. The golden tablets on the walls of the starting room that he dismissed as random scribbles told a story that escaped his knowledge.
At least for now.
The blonde argued that he could at least try to decipher some of the symbols if he had to spend a significant amount of time anyways. Then, he scolded himself for even defending his interests. No one was here anyways, what did he have to hide?
Collecting the relic, Kei was transported back to the main room, experiencing the same amount of nausea as the first time he was teleported. Would he ever get used to that? The relic vanished from his hand, only to land on top of the very first pedestal, where he got his current whip from.
The small fire bowls lit up, glowing with a green fire, apparently symbolizing the achievement Kei had just made. Looking around at the other pedestals, the middle blocker realized with a groan that he’d have to run through 23 more temples at least. And upon closer inspection, he could see even more pedestals in the distance, even if they seemed to belong to another sort of game mode.
Taking a deep breath, Kei grabbed the next whip and prepared to run through yet another temple filled with death traps, endless falls and unfair guardians. One thought was constantly running through his mind, fueling his determination and briefly making him forget his aching body.
leaving an ask to say i'm rereading kga and clawing at my enclosure. genuinely the best fanfiction i've ever read. it's constantly at the back of my mind. maybe i'll understand last shift now. maybe i'll finally read lies within. anything can happen. genuinely though i LOVE KGA SO MUCH, i have so much fanart from like 2020 tucked away that i need to redraw, the five nights fixation is temporary but the kga fixation is forever
