On Illegal Subscription Formats And Assholes

So way back when I started college there was some video game soundtrack I really wanted (the Jet Set Radio Future one) and because I don’t torrent and I didn’t at the time the only site I could find it at was KHInsider. They would either let me download song by song for free or if I bought a 6 month subscription, I’d get to download albums at the same time. I figured at the time “Hey why not do it this time, get all I want and unsubscribe.” I forgot about it though because I was in college.

6 months later, 4 days before I got an email mentioning it would renew and I was like “How do I quit?” Finals were also that week and I got caught up, got busy and got $20 charged, overdrafted, got charged $40 and then you know how the shit spiral happens.

This pattern repeated over and over and I never actually downloaded anything else. I got notifications from spam bots on the site my account was being hacked and they needed my info (they did not). I sent requests to learn how to unsubscribe and got nothing back. Their FAQ did not mention how to leave.

That shit is now actually illegal to some degree according to my understanding of the “Restore Online Shoppers Conference Act” which makes it illegal if you have an auto billing and you don’t have the instructions to leave easily laid out (and trust me the site does not but since I lost a max of $80 o them in fees, I don’t have enough to sue). Check out this article. 

I did finally figure out how to unsubscribe. Via Paypal. Via 4 different pages leading to my subscription. And then it was over. And seriously, screw you KHInsider and your ilk. Screw you for spam notifications and not getting back to me about leaving. Screw you for hiding information on how to unsubscribe and taking me for up to $80. Screw you for making leaving your subscription trap one of my best life experiences.

If you would like to get back into my graces, post in three places how you might unsubscribe. Explain it in the re-subscription emails that you send. Explain it in the subscription information page. Explain it on the goddamned FAQ section. Yes you will lose money but if that is what you want, you are going to be paying in the future when someone does sue or worse.

Also if you read this whole thing and have an issue with people doing the same thing, reblog it. This shit is illegal to a degree and annoying.
