My eleven-year-long Dungeons & Dragons game finished last week. Here are my disorganized thoughts on the subject, if you’re into that sort of thing.

Our regular group is in the middle of some inter-party drama, and the wizard couldn't make it, so rather than carrying on without him (given that he's in the middle of things), we picked up some level 1 pregenerated PCs.  The PCs are sent to rescue a kidnapped noble.

A half-hour from the adventure site, they run into a random encounter: a gnoll pack lord and four giant hyenas.  The paladin intimidates the gnoll pack lord, and although they don't speak the same language, the meaning is clear.  The gnoll lord won't let them pass, but it will let them leave.  (So they'd have to backtrack and go another way around, possibly losing their time advantage.)

The paladin decides that's not good enough and issues the challenge.  Initiative is rolled, and the inevitable result arrives: TPK.  Life is hard out there for a level 1 adventuring party.
