There’d be no use in banning alcohol. It has been tried, it doesn’t work. Also if it is legal, it can be controlled better. I am pro legalising weed, but i am very against using it.
Thanks for the comment. I might be still a bit too hungover to properly reply, but here are some thoughts.
Our society indeed isn’t ready for an escapism-free life. We partially need alcohol, poetry, psychiatric medication, recreational drugs, fidget spinners and other more or less meaningful or harmful things, because we live very unnatural lives, have bodies poisoned by strange things, are conditioned to live up to unrealistic expectations, etc. Any meaningful change in consumption would need to be preceded by a drastic societal change. Without that, removing one form of escapism (alcohol) could lead to different form of discharge (violence).
And yeah, moonshine is a thing, and the US prohibition was a thing. Who profited most were the gangs willing to break the law. I’m sure there are more historical precedents.
Counter-intuitively, for most people, the most effective way to combat addiction is to allow them in a controlled manner. Decriminalization of drugs in Portugal allows some insights - of course it still remains a complex topic, but one of the things Portugal does well is the support system they have. They dare to ask the real questions - why are you taking drugs? How can we help you find a job? Do you have a meaningful life, supportive community, healthy habits? Going “wow you’re a bad person” rarely ever helped someone recover.
OK now we’re venturing into the land of my speculations, but I think - whether we like it or not - thanks to the omnipresent technology, we have potentially tremendous control over private lives of people. Sooner or later, I think some of these dystopian scenarios might come true (I will exaggerate or the fun of it) -
Due to a globalized rise of terrorism, governments will enforce chips as a form of identification - probably embedded at the back of your hand
These chips will also have sensors in them
Your smartphone will continuously monitor your blood alcohol level through that
Your health record will be uploaded into the government’s cloud (lol j/k it will be run by a private company like facebook probably)
all purchases of alcohol will go through your ID, so the government will be able to limit the amount you buy
best case scenario, if you drink regularly, you’ll be invited to counseling sessions
worst case scenario, your insurance for possibly alcohol-related health problems will be removed, or the price will be raised
OK I’m not sure if I actually had a point
it just pisses me off that things that literally ruin people’s lives are so abundantly available (and I’m not talking about the open bar yesterday)
