The Khatchaturian Toccata does use practically every octave of the piano and the use of all 3 pedals so haha. My upright piano sadly does not have the same function as the grand piano’s sostenuto piano so I can’t do this piece justice in my own home *sad noises*

Like most Russian, or in his case, Armenian, composers (and artists in general) Khachaturian endured a difficult and fluctuating relationship with the Russian Government, although generally he fared much better than Shostakovich. This may be partly because he focused on ballet music, concertos and ‘lighter’ orchestral pieces than Dmitri’s more overtly ‘political’ symphonies. Or it may be because he was able to curry favour in his role as administrator of the Union of Soviet Composers and for the luck of being chosen to score the soundtrack to a film bio of their venerable leader, Vladimir Ilyich Lenin. Although entitled Spartacus, my CD, performed by the LSO, contains pieces from three compositions: his two most well-known ballets, Spartacus and Gayane, and Masquarade, written as incidental music to accompany a play which he later refashioned into an orchestral suite. But it is the first two pieces for his he is most celebrated, noted on the cover of my CD: “Music made famous through use in the popular TV series The Onedin Line.” The music it refers to is the exquisite Adagio of Spartacus and Phrygia from Spartacus, but several parts of the ballet music have been used across film and television, and the equally beautiful and lyrical Adagio from Gayane was also used notably in the “Jupiter Mission, 18 months later” section of Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. The Sabre Dance from Gayane has been used in scenes directed by Billy Wilder and Woody Allen and others to denote perfectly that frenzied, comic moment of crazed activity. Khachaturian’s music is colourful, melodic, rhythmic, immediately accessible and enjoyable to listen to. That doesn’t make him lightweight, it makes him a composer of ‘the people’, in that he incorporates many of the Eastern European folk music from his homeland.
