Next bird is a Varied Thrush! They’re possibly my favorite thrush species, at least in the US.
Before preening and after preening
Honestly, I wish I’d done more but I ran out of time. This is also the thrush who’s back I completely destroyed a month ago. I finally got back to him after the conference.
Feathers cover so much! It’s incredible! Good preening can cover all matter of sins
You can never use too much sawdust! (I repeat this over and over to new preparators)
Saw dust helps soak up fluids (blood, grease, etc.) to keep feathers clean. It’s a lot easier to keep a bird clean than to wash them later…
…that being said, I did end up washing this bird
This Varied Thrush was hit by a car. The collision left this indent in the skull and you can see the red stain of the internal bleeding.
Thrushes also tend to tear their throats in collision. Foreshadowing… about how much sewing this bird required.
