Orange Rain - Color Update !
Note : Havent updated pages yet as need recolor and reupload all them , which may take some time , this just showing our thought process
Spent entire 2 days and many many hours adjusting colors to be more clear
To go into more details on issues:
as said on page , there was major issues on original BG palette with its Orange blending into Green of Frisk , practically looking like exact same color and shade making it rlly hard to see Frisk
Even though it was intent to make Frisk more blend into sky in this section , it was too much , not thought out , and visually inacessible
Another didnt mention as didnt fit , was that the Blue-Grey at top and Orange were also very similar shades , so in Monochromacy you can barely see sky's gradient
This all was major oversight as spent least amount of time on Orange Rain section so didnt check it's color accessibility , unlike other sections in comic which we did check it's colors
Now going over color choice changes:
Specifically Hue changes are very intentional and have purpose
So first we started with dulling and brightening the colors so contrasts more with character's deeper saturated colors and keeping its foggy rain feel
Then with Orange , picking points from existing BG gradient and going from there so that the Orange has a blueish tint
Going from there , we then adjusted Orange hue into being red while still appearing orange in Full Color vision
To hopefully explain best as can , in Full Color vision , green is considered a cool color while magenta is a warm color
However , in Red-Blind and Green-Blind vision , green is a warm color while magenta is a cool color , red being the dark greyish-brown in between
So in other words , if want make an Orange appear cooler tone and different from Yellow/Green in this , making it Red will give it a cooler tone as its closer to blue as well as Red having a more visual difference compared to Yellow or Green , the desaturated tone it naturally has is also easier to work with
And if you do a specific shade of Pale Red , it'll still be seen as orange in Full Color vision
And as for Grey-Blue for top gradient
It was made be "True Blue" , being nudged more to purple side so blends in better with Orange (red) background
It was also greatly desaturated as it appears too saturated and sharp if not . Also made this color much more brighter while still under White , so that gradient is clear in Monochromacy
Another thing , in Full Color vision , a Pale True Blue will appear purple , this is why you often might make Blue more towards Cyan if wanting make a light blue
We were able mostly avoid this effect as making this Blue-Purple very very desaturated as well as next to Red-Orange , itll make this Grey-Blue appear more light blue while still having a minor purple tone that gives more depth instead of interfering with effect
So all of this together , even though it appears as "just brightened and desaturated everything" , tons of things were done to it so that should be much more clear across different colorblindness first and foremost , and this should help with readability across the board
And heres example of color adjustment for a full page
So really want to emphasize how important this was , Frisk was completely indistinguishable to background colors before this ,
and now colors and tones across the board now fits how section should feel while still keeping identity as Orange Rain section
To understand and love colors is to understand that it's human and every eye is important , more important than what you think it should be or what the color wheel / color picker says .
Every color is many things , and whats important is what you see , not your brain's judgement
Anyways , always check your colors and adjust , we use this site
Making art visually accessible doesnt mean need "sacrifice color choice" , and if do , promise itll be worth it for better experience
