Since we’re talking about the way cars experience gender, I wanted to give my two cents about Kitt because Kitt is best boy.
I feel like Kitt’s gender identity centers a lot around his voice. He really likes and identifies strongly with his voice, so it makes sense that, his voice being masculine, he identifies as male. Another important part of his identity might be also based on how he interacts with the other important men in his life: Micheal and Devon. I want to highlight Devon here especially, because Kitt carries himself a lot like how Devon presents- an intelligent, debonair gentleman with the voice of reason. With Devon being a bit of a father figure to him, it makes sense that Kitt would want to imitate that.
However, our boy has no time for gender roles! Kitt isn’t afraid to express more traditionally feminine traits, which is something I appreciate our 80s show for not belittling very often (for being an 80s show it does really well!). Kitt cares a lot about his appearance. He doesn’t like getting dirty. He’s definitely the more submissive one of the bunch. And he hecking asks for flowers I mean really~
Last night I dreamt that they brought back Knight Rider 2008 for another season (for whatever the fuck reason) and it started off by bringing back KI2T, circuits and vehicle wholly, and of course they started bickering with KI3T. "Why have I been replaced with this nonsensical beast??" "Michael would not have let this happen!" Etc...
The reason that KI2T was brought back as a whole was to a). share their past memories on missions that were blocked behind a password wall that no one except the OG Michael Knight (hoff) and KI2T possessed or knew about (and that KI3T could not for the life of them work around - "primitive encryption that modern machines didn't know how to break", and the Hoff had forgotten the password through not using it over the past few decades) and b.) to add to the team and get upgrades(kind of a type of fanservice?? I would be 100% for this lol - seeing KI2T apart and "dead" in the KR2008 pilot, I honestly cried lmao)
I unfortunately woke up before a major plot point was revealed, but would LOVE a bonus episode of KR2008 like that.
