It was supposed to be for the second day of the @kidgefest, but I was so busy that I finished it until now (I even felt lazy to make it a background 😂 ).
At least I could finish it before the winter ended 😁🎉.

When he opened his eyes, he was met with a glaring yellow sun. The air felt heavier than he was used to, the sky was darker than Earth’s with no clouds in site. When he sat up he was a little shocked to be faced with snow. It was just as wet and cold as he remembered it when his father took him one time to play in it. All that was missing was the implication of Zarkon was defeated and his son Lotor, was ruling the remaining Garla with a kinder tone.
The fallen snow wasn’t what he expected, nor the way Pidge was a foot away from him with a look he couldn’t decipher. Her hair was tied into a high ponytail that reached down to her waist, (Was it always that long?) her eyes looked like she has seen too much. When he got up she put on her helmet and ushered him to follow her. His body was sluggish but he made do as he watched her talk into the com with a practice ease.
She was older.
Her voice was a little lower that came with age, he wouldn’t think about the way her body was definitely giving him hints that something was off. He was sure that time couldn’t have spontaneously speed up without raising some concerns. His own body was worn down, he took note of his body armor being somewhat intact from his legs but there were burnt marks around the edges, whereas his chest area was horribly cracked with one half missing. His helmet was completely crushed. When he opened his mouth, he winced instantly.
It was almost too hard to talk; his throat was tightening up. In panic Pidge turned around and pulled him closer to her. “Keith?! Keith! Shit.” She touched her helmet, “Lance, Allura I got him. Please hurry up before…. KEith!”
The next scene he woke up to was the castle. The pod was open with the team all looking at him with tears and a long heavy sadness covering their bodies. They were all older too, (well minus Shiro, who wasn’t there but instead Matt.) It was confusing because the last thing he remembered was that he was in the middle of a battle. Not in this snow planet with most of his team members being careful around his presence.
He could tell that they all wanted to say something to ease the tension. How Hunk and Coran were too close to wanting to give him a bone crushing hug or how Lance was strangely keeping quiet. Allura was smiling but it was obvious that it was hollow and diplomatic. Matt was awkward as he back off and gave him space to watch his surroundings.
He tested his throat, “Where’s Shiro?”
They didn’t say anything. He stumbled forward, “Where are we? Why do you all look…. what’s going on?”
He tried his best to level his head but with the quietness after his questions prevailed Keith was getting worried and scared. Was Shiro taken again? Had he been in a coma from the battle and now time sped up? But then it didn’t add up that he woke up in that planet alone with Pidge being there to locate him.
“Keith,” Pidge spoke up. “It’s been three years. Shiro is dead.”
“What?”
His veins grew cold, his hands clutched each other and digged into his chest. He was sure that somewhere in hell Zarkon was laughing at him as he allowed his feet to crumble. “What? That’s not possible. Shiro can’t be...he isn’t…. You’re all wrong!”
They didn’t touch him until he allowed himself to feel their bodies crying with him. The tears that swelled down to his cheeks were bitter because in the back of his mind he knew he wasn’t there to prevent Shiro’s demise. Keith had been out of action when it happened. He didn’t know when they all took turns to tell him that Shiro was able to stop the war. Inside his body, it was buzzing, the time in the pod gave him a better shot at reviewing all his conflicting memories.
He noticed how all the facts that they gave him were too vague. Nonetheless, it still stung to hear the date, to see how his face was untouched by time.
“But then why did I wake up in this planet? If I was out of commission, then wouldn’t it have made sense if I woke up here first?”
There was another pause.
“Please, just tell me.”
Matt walked over to him with a small tablet, “Do you remember the time when you went to another dimension?”
Keith nodded as Hunk continued. “We had another reading of the same wavelengths and pressure where we found you. Pidge was the first to find you. We umm think…” he looked so worn down, “We think that wherever you were before you woke up here had a small slip of enough energy that it was able to transport you to our dimension and time. Three years into a possible future for you at least.”
He didn’t know what exactly he said next or where he went for the next few minutes after the revelation. The rest of the group was careful with their words as he roamed into the castle as he was aware of the ghosts roaming now. Dinner was somewhat lighter, but he knew that he would have to leave soon. He couldn’t stay with the thoughts of this future bearing seeds into his own. Two days pass quickly of him wandering and walking on eggshells as they all watch him with lingering sadness.
They didn’t have many stories that included him. Each of them gave off comments that it was nice to have Keith using the sparing deck like old times. He didn’t piece together the clues. He was too tired and scared of knowing what could lie ahead of him. The extra suite that was provided for him was the last thing he needed before Pidge whisked him off to where she found him.
A short ride from Pidge’s green lion and a few minutes of hiking later he found himself still studying this dimension’s Pidge. She had pulled off her helmet the moment they landed, giving him enough time to him admire the way her hair flew with the wind. Keith had always thought she looked pretty with her short hair but seeing this version and length he wanted to compliment her out loud. Her height wasn’t too drastic but it was nice to see she was now a few centimeters taller than his current height. With her beside him he snuck a glance at her eyes as she looked forward with her arm giving them the coordinates.
When it buzzed one of her arms pulled out into the thin air and watched how the energy was pulling them closer. She turned her head and opened her mouth before closing it again.
“So, this is it then?”
She nodded, Keith couldn’t help but feel horrible as he watched how Pidge’s eyes watered, “Please...don’t do it.”
Keith took a step forward to the portal opening. “Pidge?”
Her voice broke as her hands went up to cradle his face. He didn’t object to the intimacy that was hovering between them. He leaned in so that their foreheads were touching. Her tears fell one by one as she tried her best to memorize how warm he was and breathing still. He touched her hands when he opened his eyes. When she smiled at him for what was probably the last for her, his memories went straight to back to the first time he met this Pidge. Those eyes that engulfed him looked now reminded him of the pain of seeing an old ghost of the past.
Keith didn’t know what or when she was potentially referring too, but nodded in half confusion and the other to ease her pain. “I... Okay. I promise.”
She didn’t look convince but conceded. “Go. Before it disappears.”
Keith kissed her lips without thinking about the consequences and left. When he went in he didn’t see how Pidge’s heart broke once again as she remembered how he was dressed exactly the way how her own Keith died when Voltron was stuck inside the planet, Naxzela, and how he sacrificed himself by destroying the force field so they could win the battle and later the whole war. It had been three years since peace but with the cost of her father, Shiro and Keith...sometimes Pidge couldn’t help but wish on a star for a second chance to have them again.
He wasn’t her Keith.
He had the same hurt expression of being alone and being unable to express all his despair in the open, his sarcasm was still just as quick but she could still find the smallest differences that separated him from the Keith of this dimension. This Keith was just as confused about his heritage and place of leadership in the war but there was this fire in his eyes that refused to die out.
Maybe it was because of this unexpected trip that made him see how delicate the future was. That, or because this Keith had this extra something that her Keith didn’t. It would remain a mystery as she cleaned her face and went back to her lion. It wouldn’t do her any good of focusing on the past; she didn’t want to go back to those nights of her reliving that memory of watching his ship go out in flames. Not when Voltron was still in use for the smaller missions of maintaining the peace that many galaxies and lives fought for.
No, she would go back to the castle and go back to her team where her life was. She would in the privacy of her dreams would think back to the kiss and wish for that Keith to listen the clues they gave him and make a better future. Because she wanted to believe that she could save another Voltron from losing their paladins.

Her sigh was the first indication; it was so quiet that he barely heard it at all. He saw her tired eyes dulling and how her lips were pursing into a tight frown as she made her way back to her workstation. She took off her glasses momentarily as she tried her best to wipe off the evidence that showed her weariness. It didn’t do much to hide the shadows underneath her eyes were getting more pronounce the longer she stayed awake. Her heavy feet were giving away hints that she was getting too close to her breaking point too. Keith didn’t stop himself from walking beside her as he lightly bumped his shoulder with hers in concern.
“How long has it been since you seen your bed and slept?”
His voice was just as tired for someone that came back from a mission and finished a long grueling last minute debriefing. Pidge groaned in annoyance as she looked at his face. She almost flipped him the bird, but in the last second she cracked her neck.
“Probably around the same time Lance and Hunk were puking their guts out after their milkshake eating contest.”
Keith didn’t bother to lecture her any further as Pidge admitted an early defeat. They both knew that Shiro would eventually come and make rounds to check up on them specifically (as they were the two notoriously stubborn duo that would forget to sleep). With their faces mirroring each other almost perfectly with clear signs of sleep deprivation they both continued on passing Pidge’s workstation and instead headed to where their rooms would be.
It was quiet again. Besides the noise of their feet walking Keith’s senses were starting to dull. The only other occasional echoes that phased him were from the castle's unique hums as it flew in space.
“Keith?”
He looked down, “Yeah?”
Pidge leaned on him as she slurred her words and almost stopped walking entirely. It was like Pidge was running on empty sooner than she anticipated. “Can we stop here for a couple of seconds?”
She didn’t give him much time to answer out loud the way her head rested on his shoulder. Keith felt it at the same time he saw as she tried to concentrate on staying awake. (Although she was failing hard.) Her glasses were sliding off her nose, her breathing was evening out as her eyes were closed peacefully. His own feet were still as the seconds ticked slowed down considerably. Keith's next thoughts drifted automatically as he took in his situation, did she just? He couldn’t help but chuckle in response.
One of his arms went to her back and the other hoisting her legs up quickly, it would looked like he would have to carry her back to her room. But first he would ask just in case she was stubborn enough to wake up and insist that she could still make it back to her room by herself.
He called out softly,“Pidge?”
She groaned as she slowly opened one of her eyes, “What?” Her head bumped into his chest making her raise her head up in confusion before raising her arms up so that they were wrapped around his neck.
Even as, she was falling asleep again in his arms there was still some mischief in her voice. “Am I too heavy for you?”
“Nope.” Keith smirked quickly, “Just wondering if you’re okay with me carrying you back to your room.”
She didn’t reply right away. It was more like an low hum and a slow nod, “It’s okay... all good Mr. broody pretty boy.”
He had a good comeback but with Pidge so close to him he forgot how to breathe and the comeback was lost. It was clever though, he knew that much because he laughed inside his head before he could say it out loud for her to appreciate his humor. When they arrived Pidge was somewhat aware of her actions the way she smiled all goofy and lighthearted. She looked so free from her previous worries from earlier of the day when she was trying to find where was her father. They may have found Matt but her father was still out there. Waiting or in trouble for all they knew.
As he put her down he missed the warmth of her body instantly. It was weird how these kinds of thoughts were recurring more often the longer he watched and interacted with their resident tech wiz. It wasn’t awful, just a little too new for him to get obsessed with wanting to impress her and find excuses to hangout with her than before he realized that he liked her differently than the rest of the team. She was still leaning against him as she put a hand on her door. She inched away from him before meeting his glance.
The way her smirk appeared on her lips made him curious, she didn’t waste any time to grab one of his arms and tugged him to lean down, so he could hear her whisper out loud,“What? No goodnight kiss?”
She tiptoed up as he caught on to her teasing. And for once Pidge was faster and more willing to be bold as she kissed him quickly before laughing at his face as she closed the door and went straight to her bed. Keith was frozen for a couple of seconds as he replayed the kiss over and over until his body reminded him that he need to sleep. When his head hit his pillow his smile was still there. Falling asleep never felt so light.
Waking up was still a chore, even with the hazy memory of Pidge kissing him Keith found himself still stumbling during breakfast. With her sitting next to him he ate a little swifter and cautious as he caught her faint blush when their hands brushed against each other. Walking together to the sparing deck was the only indication and space for them to awkwardly hold hands in the open. They both remembered Pidge’s first move and it seemed like neither of them wanted to beat around the bush of second guessing their next kiss. Their union may have happened sporadically but nonetheless, Keith was relieved that his feelings were mutual.

Sometimes Keith wished he was better at responding with sudden confessions and emotions like he was with his sword in the heat of battle.
Watching how carefully his voice was dipping Keith almost stopped abruptly; this wasn’t the time to shiver and flee. The increase of his cheeks coloring in embarrassment wasn’t comfortable either. It had happened again. The sight of a small crowd coming over to catch him off guard was the last thing he wanted to deal with. With the best of his abilities (and it was sorely lacking) he coughed most of his uncertainties from the figurative window.
He wore his best sympathetic expression and hoped that he didn’t sound like an insensitive jerk. The look he received was as expected, but it still hurt to know that he inadvertently caused damage to another. The awkwardness of his rejection skimmed the air, even when the person that confessed left the area. It was heavy in the way that Keith didn’t know how to feel, relieved? Horrible? All he knew was that he was stuck in the middle of wishing he wasn’t aware of the stiffness of his body when he thought back to his own feelings.
But what else was he supposed to have done, lie to their face and himself? He had been honest to them, there were no feelings that cross into his own and was mutual. It was like he was in a one-way street and they were driving in the opposite direction while making a U-turn to try to get in his lane. It was stifling to have this kind connection with most people he had to deal with. His comrades, acquaintances, and few close friends were easier to maintain.
However, it seemed like Keith was driving into new roads. Ones that had steeper angles and more sudden speed bumps disrupting his pace. It was troublesome because it aligned itself with his own epiphanies surrounding his new development of interest regarding Pidge.
There was no romance brewing.
No matter how many times Lance thought he read between the supposed lines Keith had with Pidge. Under most circumstances, he had thought he was able to convey his aloof coyness with minimal effort. That and he got better at hiding his crush on her with his stoic and quiet conversations he shared with her. His heart may have been toppled by his persistence of keeping it platonic but he made it his mission to not come off as a complete mushy dork around her. Which was probably why he was frustrating himself when he only comprehended at how stupid he really was being.
It wouldn't matter how many hours or days passed, he was sure his feelings wouldn't disappear that quickly. There may have been more pressing issues to deal with but if Keith was going to be honest he didn't want to forgo all his feelings away. Not when he knew his crush would eventually come to light. It would, it was called having Lance around playing matchmaker. And Keith was open season.
The problem with confessing was the timing and willingness to be put out there for rejection or acceptance. Which the two moods were nothing but constant companions. He'd always had that fear of being rejected because he couldn't find a way to fit in. In most cases, he was fine being different, but he couldn't deny that one part of himself that wanted to be accepted. Falling in love was the same, he found Pidge’s reaction towards his affection to be frightening.
That was why it was hard to pinpoint when it was okay to open himself up. There was always a mission to go to, a meeting to attend and his nerves shooting him down when she spared a glance at his direction. Keith may have been considered one the best pilots out there and a great fighter but, he was not that calm to pour out his feelings out in the open like Lance was when he sported a flirty grin and pick-up lines being thrown out with self-assurance when he saw a pretty girl. He didn’t even think that the day of him confessing would even approach him all too soon.
But it did.
She came up to find him one random day, there were no pressing missions to take or diplomatic meetings to go to. Her glowing face was enough for him to agree to anything. It was a little unnerving when he first realized at the extent he would go to keep Pidge smiling.
“Are you free this afternoon?”
She had a knitted hat under her helmet, which was oddly curious for him to have noticed it this late after their brief ride out from the castle walls and inside her lion. The suspension of their destination was only half a distraction when he figured quickly that it would only be the two of them for their little trip. When she edged off her helmet he saw the fabric he remembered Hunk purchased last week when they both went together to the space mall.
“Nice hat.”
Pidge snorted, “Thanks.” One hand thumbed over the beanie. Then she grinned back at his very colorful knitted fingerless gloves he was sporting over his armor. “Nice gloves, though, isn’t it a little unnecessary with the suit.”
He pulled them close to his face, “They bring out my eyes.”
“I can see that.”
After a few more side comments Keith started to scan the planet Pidge landed in. There was an abundant height of snow in the sky and ground, the cold air was biting his exposed face. The white winter land was a nice sight after all the missions he had non-stop. It was a break with its calm atmosphere too as he could tell that they were in a secluded section, it almost felt like they were back home on Earth.
“Wow.”
Pidge smiled at him, “I know right! When I came across this planet I remembered that you said you liked this kind of stuff. So…” she gestured to the snow, “I had to go and take you here myself since you’ve been in a lot of missions lately and I thought this could be a fun day, you know.”
His stammered laugh was all he manage when Pidge started to twirl and grab pockets of snow. It didn’t take long for a snow fight to be ensued. With all their hours, they spent on training it was fun to watch how far Pidge got with her dodging, and hits she was able to make against him. In the end, Keith won out of his own competitive spirit. When they were laying down Pidge looked over to his face with a content face.
“Have you ever danced in the snow?”
Keith shrugged his shoulders, “I lived in the desert most of my life. So, this is technically my first time for anything snow related.”
Her shocked face was hilarious and adorable, even more so when her first instinct was to grab his hands and pull him further away from their lions. She snaked her arms around his neck as she kept swaying them in some offbeat rhythm. The inconsistency and terrible dance moves made it more endearing. He enjoyed how Pidge was so carefree around him. That right now he was able to keep this proximity without it being inappropriate.
The snow was still gently falling, the sound of the dancing (but really, they were just glorified erratic stomping) made Keith snort out loud.
It had felt so good to feel the vibration run through his body. As well, to have Pidge giggle with him as she demonstrated her best impression of how her dad danced for her mom. The cold weather be damned. Keith was just happy that he got to see this side of her. It had been days (weeks) since they were able to relax like this. And to have his few moments of bliss with her like this was only perfect.
Surprisingly after their wacky stomping she began to move more with grace. Her posture began to be taller and more precise. She easily converted their awkward swaying to an acceptable waltz with her coaching him in the basics. When he asked how she knew how to dance so well all she replied with was an antidote of her asking and later convincing Matt to learn how to dance when they were younger. Their dancing was more intimate, time felt so slow as she looked at him and he was sure he was biting his lips.
He wasn’t sure who incited the first kiss; Keith was just grateful that it was mutual. Especially, when he opened his eyes to a blushing Pidge who was centimeters away pulled him back for another.
