ok guys for the next half week i cannot do anything considered strenuous by my madre (and by proxy the doc) i.e. i am out of commission. what does this mean? this means i have time for commissions (did you see my pun did you)

anyways I don't know if there's any interest at this time, so I'll just open 2 slots. hopefully i'll be back on my feet by the time those are done

IM REALLY ENVIOUS IRELAND! ARCHAEOLOGY! SPRING IN IRELAND!

Ah... the whole time I was there I kept thinking, "THIS IS ANDY'S JAM!"

The professor who started the program teaches religion in medieval history, so our first week there was basically a series of field trips to various ruins and religious sites in Ireland, including older places like Bective Abbey as well as the currently functioning Glenstal Abbey, housing a church with a paint job our tour guide monk aptly described as "reminiscent of a 60s jukebox."

It was interesting interacting with the people too. Said monk was coerced into taking a selfie with one of the students and mentioned that "if the pope can do it, I don't see why I can't."

That said, after the first week we really spent a majority of our time doing hard excavation work--since we were the first group on site we did a lot of opening of cuttings using mattocks and shovels rather than troweling for bones or artifacts. Unlike me, you probably have the know how to make more sense of what we did eventually end up finding. The Blackfriary isn't exactly the most intact religious site in the country, but we determined by the abnormally large cloister and abundance of purbeck marble that the patron funding the place was pretty stacked.

In response to the ask about theft at CSSSA that kidkillingdays received...

My suitemate had cash stolen from her wallet.  Her wallet was just sitting out on her desk in the dorm.  It turned out that the person who took it was a friend of her dormmate who had visited that day.  So just be careful of the valuables you leave in your dorm.  Even if you trust your dormmates/suitemates, keep in mind that there's other people going in your room as well, whether it's their friends, or maintenance, or the cleaning people. I brought a lock for my suitcase and before I left each day I locked all my valuables in my suitcase and used a bike lock to lock my suitcase to my bed.  Tedious, yes, but it soon became routine, and I would much rather be safe than sorry.

Generally though, I don't think thievery is too big of an issue at csssa.  The aforementioned was the only situation of theft I heard about there.  I always felt very safe there, and the only reason I was so careful of the stuff in my dorm was because, like I said, there are people entering your dorm without your knowledge.
