Kai was sitting criss-cross on the floor in front of Taehyun as he was bouncing Penelope on his knee when you walked in.
“Appa, how did you meet Eomma?” Kai asks, his eyes staring at him in adoration.
“Well, that’s a long story, buddy.” He chuckles softly to himself, barely able to believe that was almost 10 years ago. “If you go brush your teeth, I’ll tell you the story.”
“Really!?” He jumps up, stumbling slightly and running face-first into your stomach. “Oh, sorry, Eomma.” He smiles softly at you. You feel your heart warm at the smile he gives you, as it looks just like his father’s, and you bend down and kiss his cheek.
“It’s okay, my sugar bug.”
“Eww,” he groans as he wipes his cheek. “I’m five now. I’m older now.” He huffs cutely as he crosses his arms over his chest.
“Oh, really?” You raise your eyebrow. “Why don’t you scram and do what Appa asked you to do?” you tease. Kai pulls you down and kisses your cheek and runs away to the bathroom.
“Hey Eomma,” Taehyun says softly as Penelope begins to fuss again. You walk over to them and trade the baby as you bounce her on your hip. “What, no kisses for Appa?” He pouts at you. You lean down and press a quick kiss on his lips.
“Happy?” You mutter with your nose against his.
“Very,” as he rubs his nose against yours and smiles.
“Eomma, Appa, stop kissing! It makes me sick,” Kai exclaims as he walks into the room with toothpaste at the corner of his mouth.
“Sorry, buddy.” Taehyun pats his knee. “No more Eomma and Appa kissing.” He helps Kai as he climbs on him.
“Story! I brushed my teeth,” he says, bouncing up and down.
“Okay, okay.” He looks over at you as you sit down next to him and smiles as Penelope snuggles into your chest. “Ten years ago—”
“Ten years ago.” He pulls up his fingers, counting to ten. “I wasn’t even born yet.”
“Yeah, that’s right. You weren’t even born yet. I had just graduated from college, and I was working at the store for Appa.” You close your eyes as you remember the way the hot sun felt on your skin and the cool of it when you walked into the store for the first time. You saw the shy boy behind the counter as he was doing a word search, and you knew you had to have him. “And that is where I saw you, Eomma, for the first time.”
“Really? Did Halbae see her?” Kai looks up at his father.
“No, see, she would come in at 2 a.m. every night.”
“2 a.m.? Is that morning or night?” Kai questions, looking over at you.
“That’s very early in the morning, but that was what time Eomma got off of work.”
“Eomma, why would you work so late!?” He scolds.
“Well, the hospital at the time—and kinda still is—they didn’t have enough people to work, so Eomma did.”
“Oh,” he sniffles. “Well, what would you get at the store?”
“I got Cheesy Ramyeon and coconut water,” you say as you remember the way Taehyun had looked at you and the way his eyes reflected the spark in your eye.
“Every night without missing a beat,” Taehyun says as he pushes Kai’s hair out of his face. “She would be wearing this huge yellow hoodie that she was drowning in, and she would get her ramyeon and coconut water and buy them and leave.”
“That’s it?” Kai looks between the two of you in confusion.
“Well, yeah. It was like that for 4 or 5 months. Eomma was really shy,” you say quickly. “And I wanted to see how long it would take your Appa to talk to me.”
“But one night, it was raining so hard that it sounded like rocks were falling out of the sky, and Eomma came in soaked in her yellow hoodie. I felt bad, but it felt like a frog was stuck in my throat, so I didn’t say anything. So when she came up to the counter, and she was getting ready to leave, I grabbed her hand.”
You smile at the memory of the feeling of his shaky fingers intertwining with your steady ones. “And he said, ‘It’s raining really hard out. Let me walk you home.’ I said yes, of course, because it was pouring, but I really did want to hang out with your Appa.”
“And on this walk, I asked her, ‘Why do you always buy the same ramyeon every day?’ and your Eomma said, ‘Well, because I wanted to share them with someone.’”
“She said that?” Kai’s eyes widen.
“Yeah, your Eomma is very smooth, and when it came to me, she had me wrapped around her finger, and I wouldn’t want it any other way.”
“On that walk, your Appa talked and talked about music, the store, his family—he spilled it all out—and I realized that he wasn’t the shy boy behind the counter. There was so much to him that no one but I would know.” You look over at him and smile.
“Once we got to your Eomma’s apartment, she invited me upstairs to eat ramyeon with her. We both ate out of the pot with one pair of chopsticks since she didn’t have any plates, and she talked till the morning.”
“That whole night you guys didn’t get tired?” Kai yawns.
“Oh, Kai, we were tired, but we didn’t want to stop talking to each other. We wanted to get to know each other on a deeper level than anyone else,” you say softly.
“And on my walk back to the store, I realized how head over heels I was for you, Eomma.”
“And I kept coming to the store like that for 6 months until we both admitted that we were dating, and even after, till we moved in together.”
“And then we got married and had you and your baby sister.”
Kai rubs his eyes. “Eomma.”
“Yes, sugar bug?”
“Can we have ramyeon and coconut water for breakfast tomorrow?”
