          PONYTAILED  HEAD  LIFTS  at  the  request,  brown  eyes  wide  with  surprise.  of  course  he’d  overheard  them,  and  that  was  half  the  point,  but  not  a  single  one  of  the  girls  had  thought  for  a  moment  he’d  actually  respond !  max’s  gaggle  of  girlfriends  descend  into  a  fit  of  embarrassed  giggles,  along  with  the  rest  of  the  class.  she  won’t  lie—  she’s  taken  off  guard  by  the  question,  too.  she  wasn’t  SERIOUS.  at  least,  not  completely.  still,  she  recovers  seamlessly,  leaning  forward  on  her  elbows.  the  eyes  of  her  friends  linger  on  her,  the  bravest,  the  wittiest.  she  speaks  with  hardly  a  hesitation,  knowing  full  well  that  everyone  in  the  classroom  is  watching  her.  clever  girl  /  impulsive  girl.  “ say  please,  professor, ”  she  counters,  playing  at  a  purr  with  her  tone  of  voice,  sabotaged  by  a  suppressed  laugh.  one  of  her  friends  playfully  slaps  her  arm  like  a  scolding  while  another  hisses  max’s  full  name  like  a  swear  word.  max  hardly  notices.  she  sits  back  in  her  desk,  smirking,  and  pretends  to  work  on  the  assignment.

       “   OH  MY  !   “  the maiden was more than startled to see the somewhat out of place gentleman standing a few feet away from her. how did he even get there in the first place ? no matter. as always, a bright smile was present across her soft features, ready to greet the new stranger. “   hello ! i’m sorry, you gave me a bit of a fright. i didn’t even notice you there !   “
