Forest Regeneration in Dry Shade (feat. My Ugly Fenced Garden)
In 2023, a Hickory tree shaded out my sunflower garden, rather than cut the branch I decided to plant a few ferns, a red maple, and toss in some local seed in this dry shade.
What i got in two years was a massive amount of diversity without any major intervention aside from light weeding. 2 species quickly became 18, the increase in caterpillars and native bees has been very pleasant in a spot that was, 5 years ago, just a bunch of dead lawn. Additionally the plant cover has assisted in retaining much more moisture.
Of the most successful seed species are Wavy Goldenrod, White Wood Aster, American Jumpseed, Wild Geranium, and Violets hidden beneath.
Present: Solomon's Seal, Mapleleaf Viburnum, Eastern Columbine, yellow pimpernel,
Shrubs and Trees: Northern Spicebush, White oak, Red maples, One mockernut hickory and Elderberry
Love flowers and hate your awful shaded lawn? Try what I did!
