As I dismounted, I saw that a stream of blood had run from the General's body some six or eight feet off and ended in a dark pool. Leaning over, I asked, "General, do you know me?" Then he opened his eyes, looked me full in the face, seeming to comprehend and closed them again. He died. There was not a dry eye in that sad group.
