“Yeah, it’s pretty out here. Sometimes I’d sell my left nut to get back out West, but Switzerland is a good-lookin’ place.”
He looked at Xio a moment, his expression telling a tale of heavy decisions. Seconds later, he swept off his serape and laid it in the grass. With an unceremonious plunk onto it, he looked up at the sniper and patted the spot next to him. “Take a load off, Santiago – sit your ass down. You work too hard, or some such bullshit.”
The day was one of those perfect ones: not too hot and not too cold, not too humid, light breeze, sun and shade. For awhile, he just sat and smelled the air, green and almost sweet somehow. It was so relaxing and almost dreamy, his mouth got ahead of him.
“You think it’s true there’s no such thing as a normal life? There’s just life and you live it?”
Xio watched the land before them rather than looking at McCree as he spoke, the two of them having gotten away from the others for a while. Xio preferred the solitude. She couldn’t tell if Jesse did, or if he was more the kind to join someone else who wanted solitude too. For once, she didn’t mind his company.
She looked at him as he started moving, the serape he usually wore being laid out on the grass. He sat with all the grace of a... well, with all the grace of him, and patted the spot next to him. She considered it for a moment before she shifted, stepping over to him, careful not to step on the serape, sitting on it instead. Ridiculous or not, Jesse liked the thing. She wasn’t gonna stomp all over it.
They sat in silence for a few minutes, just enjoying the day. The temperature was good, the sky was pretty clear. It was a good day for this, just taking time out to get sort of isolated for a while, not be busy inside and irritated.
“... Yeah, I guess,” Xio said after a minute, finally responding to his question. “I mean... I don’t really think that your life is set in stone and all that bullshit. I can see, just in my own life, how shit could have gone different... But I guess I can see how someone’d believe that there’s just life and you just live it.” She paused, shifting her gaze back over to him. “What do you think?”
