ARE YOU BACK???
I’m back in the sense that I’ll be reblogging posts and answering asks on a semi-regular basis.... for now. I’ll probably be dipping out again for a few months come mid-January, seeing as how that’s when the semester starts and classes will once again be in full swing. But for the time being, I am here :3
what would u do if a cow head towards u with deadly purpose pls respond
my answer depends entirely on whether the rest of the cow’s body is attached to the head
104. Remember that really embarrassing memory you told me to never speak of again? (whatever fandom/original writing you'd like to use!!)
Eliza had been sprawled across her bed for hours, but she’d never felt less rested. Her bedspread was completely concealed by a layer of textbooks and papers. The pages felt like sandpaper beneath her fingers. Her vision swam with equations and letters that had long ago stopped making sense. Her brothers could have written this book in the time Eliza had spent trying to understand it, but she was determined to overcome her lack of genius through sheer persistence.
Just as she turned her attention to another chapter, her bedroom door flew open. Eliza jumped, crushing three hours’ worth of notes, and looked up at her older brother. The only one of the seven who hadn’t yet interrupted her study session.
She sighed. Their concern was touching, but it was starting to get really, really annoying. “I know it’s my birthday, and I promise I’ll relax later, but this exam is in three days and…”
Ray didn’t seem to hear her. He just strode inside, long legs bouncing with each step. “Lizard, remember that really embarrassing memory you told me never to speak of again?”
Did he calculate the ways to best annoy her? She rose from the bed and pointed toward the door. “Get out.”
He stopped, blinked, and seemed to see her for the first time since he’d entered the room. “Sorry, not the best way to put it. But it’s for science.”
Now that he’d stopped moving, Eliza could see that his face was red and chapped—and were those snowflakes in his dark hair? She glanced out the window at the late spring sunshine and her heart raced.
Ray had been spending more time near the streams lately, making observations to calibrate the Machine, he said. But he’d always preferred experience to theory, and she doubted those snowflakes had fallen today.
“Did you travel–?”
Ray asked, “Do you remember that speech you gave when you were eleven? For your science class?”
What did that have to do with his research? He wasn’t going to explain until she answered, so Eliza cast her memory back. She preferred not to think about that class. She’d been much shyer then, and ever aware that her teacher expected her to be just as clever as her brothers.
She shuddered. “It was terrifying. But Dixon praised me afterward. I got a good score.” She paused as she considered Ray’s earlier words. “What’s embarrassing about that?” If he’d interrupted her college graduation preparations to tease her for subpar science in childhood projects…
Ray grinned. “Nothing. Happy birthday.”
He raced out the door with even more spring to his step. He clambered down the stairs, but even at a distance, through the sound of his footsteps, she heard him tell one of the other boys, ”It worked!”
The room seemed to spin as Eliza put the pieces into place. Had he really…? She’d known they’d developed more precise control over the Machine’s workings, but she’d never imagined they could travel to such specific days. And to interfere with her life…
Her brothers were all idiots.
Her papers fluttered behind her as she raced after him. “Ray, what have you done?”
are you perhaps thinking of Misty of Chincoteague?
