Night had just about fallen, and the trees cast long shadows on the dirt road. Ten was just walking up the path to her isolated cottage-like home, one she had found and purchased just before its would-be demolition.

She was muttering to herself, mostly about how inconvenient it was to be incapable of touching silver without feeling like her skin was being set on fire and peeled like a banana simultaneously. She held a bag of groceries in one hand, and her house key in the other.

As she approached the driveway to her home, she noticed a figure coming down the road in her direction. A boy, with pale skin and hair, whose overall appearance could have been better.

“Um, excuse me, are you lost?” She called out in concern. Her home was in the middle of nowhere, a good distance even from the town she associated with. A boy shouldn’t be walking around like this, especially not so late.

As he came closer, recognition hit her, though she was still unsure. “Wait, I know you… Hal?”

It had become routine for Roxy to glance at her wrist every so often, a habit she and most everyone had picked up from birth. Everyone had their eyes fixated on the countdown, anticipating the day they’d meet their soulmate. Roxy was overly excited because today was the day she was supposed to meet her soulmate, however she wasn’t sure where so she went about a normal day. She had to make a stop at the gun store to pick up some ammunition and for some reason she hadn’t checked her wrist for an hour or two. She decided to look down at it and in that moment she ran smack into someone, dropping her purse and her things scattering everywhere. She quickly gathered her stuff back into her bag before looking up to apologize.

“I’m really sorry I wasn’t watching where I was going.”
