In order to keep gameplay fresh between each section, Fran Bow intentionally maintains a significant delineation of “open navigation” and “trapped location” chapters. During chapters that typically start outdoors, the player has free movement and has to explore a large area in order to solve a primary puzzle, whereas when the player is trapped in a particular space, the goal almost always comes out to “escape”, with a series of quick short-form puzzles with more restrictive exploration presented instead.
