Not running according to the plan - sometimes it’s better to just run.
My training calendar from Kilomathon, which I’ve been using to get ready for this Sunday’s race in Edinburgh called for a short interval session which I had arranged to do with Michael this afternoon.
But... I had the day off work and was feeling completely stoked because I’d managed to shed nearly 11kg so far this year so I decided to put myself through my paces and see if I could grind out a slow 10k run.
My route took me along roads, up and down a few inclines (they are hills to me for the record and hills that I’ve never managed to run in a oner before to boot) and some lovely wood and farmland tracks. I surprised myself by finishing my 10k in a smattering over 1h20m and had more left in the tank.
Given that my furthest runs in the last few months have been around 7k I didn;t want to increase the distance too much and there is a race on Sunday!
All in all I’m chuffed with how I managed this, how I kept pushing on the inclines and how I managed my breathing. By far my most positive running experience, doing my thing at my pace.
It also gave me a great chance to try out the Kalenji race vest I got from Decathlon as I’m already thinking ahead to the Tiree Ultra in September and starting to work out what I need and what it needs to do.
As a first time outing with a race vest, it was a winner.
Race numbers have arrived, there’s no getting out of it now!
Ready for Sunday’s Kilomathon in Edinburgh - or as ready as we’ll ever be with just one more wee training run on Friday before the big day. Excited and slightly nervous as Michael has never run in a big race like this before.
Hopefully the sweepers won’t be right on our tails!
Kilomathon Edinburgh
Yesterday I took part in my 2nd officially organised race. I finished the 6.55k distance in 63 mins a time I'm pretty happy with considering this time last year I could not jog for more than 10 seconds! I have come along way! Now just to keep at it!
Oh my poor knees!
This weekend was a good one, went to the gym nice and early on Saturday after dropping my partner at work. Then Sunday I went out for a run and a funny thing happened. I got to the furthest point from home and it started snowing! Not just little fluffy snowflakes either, huge ones and then snowy hail! I was soaked by the time I got home but I felt good for getting out and about. Got to say though my legs and my knees last night were so sore, I ended up taking painkiller en-route to bed topped up with lots if water. Feel much better today but starting to panic about the kilomathon on Sunday as I'm still not at the right pace and I don't relish the thought of getting swept up by the pacer bus :-( Just need to keep confident, got another two sessions this week (Tues & Wed) so I can rest my legs before Sunday!
My Saturday...so far.....
Morning all,
I'm very happy today that I can say that I got up at 07:30 to take my girlfriend to work and instead of coming straight back home and getting back in to bed (like I would normally do on a Saturday), I didn't come home. I went straight to the gym! And I sweated my ass off! I pity the poor guy on the treadmill next to me when I was doing my cool down, I think I needed my shower by that point!
Managed to run/jog/shuffle 3.03km in 29mins, I need to double check when I put this into my tracker but I think this might be the furthest I have run so far. My participation in the Kilomathon next Sunday is going to be a bit of a shock to the body I've got to tell you.
When we agreed to do it back in January it seemed so far away (don't they always!) I had literally just finished my first ever 5k event and my dad's wife mentioned this event and my friend straight away said we would do it too! Oh man now I wish I had been able to breath long enough to say well we will think about it. The training has been poor for this event but I am over half a stone lighter than I was for the BUPA 5k in January so hopefully that will help a little bit. I'm not so worried about the distance (6.55k) but I am worried about the fact there is a cut off time, we only get 60 mins and well even today on the treadmill with no wind resistance I was struggling to keep pace. I guess in all fairness by the time I got to my run I had been on the bike and done lots of weights so my legs were already starting to ache.
Right must get off the computer and go get ready for the rest of my day, off to see my dad and his wife in about an hour and then got my little cousin coming to stay. Oh and the rugby is on today and I need to fit that into my schedule somewhere, plus maybe another jump on the bike later on (to work of the birthday cake I had last night for my best friends 29th!).
Hope everyone is good, have a great day!
