Kilt Boy and Leland | I Live Here - WIP
“Hey. Kilt boy. Move.” Pete was looking up from where he stood at the sink, pot in hand that he was preparing to fill with water for his oatmeal. The young man standing behind him looked irritated—the scowl across his face indicating a level of annoyance that Pete wasn’t sure he was the cause of. Either way, there was a smile sliding easily across his face as he nodded.
“Sure, no problem.” He moved to the side, setting the pot on the stove and starting his water to boil. The angry looking shorter man moved to the sink, washing his hands and ignoring Pete’s presence altogether.
He had seen the guy around often in the last two weeks, but that was nothing new. The area had a lot of drifters and squatters that would find a place to crash for a while and then move on. With the constant rotation of tenants in this apartment building it was often that one of the empty rooms would be taken over by several people at a time before the landlord or police scared them off. The lack of a lock and a constantly open door at Peter’s meant he often found random strangers in his place. A phenomenon that he was instantly pleased with when it started happening. He enjoyed being able to help someone in their journey as much as he did meeting new and interesting people—and there were plenty of those coming through his door.
This guy, whose name he had yet to learn, seemed adamant on avoided contact with anyone, especially Peter.
His water was no where close to boiling so his attention went back to his guest. He was looking around the kitchen now, a deep set scowl on his face. “Are you looking for something?” The man seemed startled by Peter’s question, turning that scowl towards him.
“No. I’m fine.”
“There’s cups and stuff up in that cabinet if you want a drink. At least, there were, if someone didn’t take them.” His smile was still on his face, despite the annoyed expression on the other boy’s.
“Yeah, well that happens when someone abandons their stuff.”
“It’s not abandoned. I live here.”
“You and everyone else in this building.”
Peter shrugged, not entirely able to negate that observation. “I guess. I actually have to pay for it, though.”
