Seohyun & Lee Jun-young in 'Love and Leashes' (2022)
Finally watched the movie, so of course I have to write a few jumbled thoughts about it.
A true coming of age story and a story of friendship above all. While I believe the drama focuses on the ML, the movie chooses instead to highlight the lives of two people who found each other. Through their platonic bond, the two navigate their 20s unapologetically, brazenly and we get to see glimpses of their adventures as they experience life to the fullest.
It's messy and it's raw. We follow their highs and their lows. They're spending their 20s like any students should: making the best of life, eating, drinking, maybe getting a bit lost along the way, living like there’s no tomorrow, trying to find their path in life.
I admire fierce, loud Jaehee who refuses to bow down, refuses to shrink, refuses to shed a part of her personality to fit in Korea's airtight society with its insane social norms and expectations.
Can't help but draw parallels with my own upbringing. I remember my halmeoni scolding me whenever I voiced my opinion too loud, whenever I called out the unfairness of Korea's patriarchal and misogynist culture. Our ongoing disagreement on what constituted an "acceptable behaviour" is one of the strongest memories I have of her. She's also a product of her own generation and it doesn't take away the fact that we shared a strong relationship.
Love in the big city is truly a breath of fresh air that we desperately need today. The story is set in Korea but the movie uses universal themes we can all relate to: growing up, finding family, societal pressure, toxic masculinity, discrimination and accepting who are.
