January's Subject: Kinamel

So, I've decided to start the new year with a character I've grossly neglected for entirely too long. She was one of my earliest Paragon-specific characters (as in created for the world rather than an older character made for something else that got ported in) along with Samuel and Dusk.

However, in order to redesign her, I had to fix the glaring problems with her ethnic group. I spent most of today researching and hunting down writers' resources for handling ethnicities respectfully. It is harder to find than I thought it would be. But I also suck at web searches and always have.

The good news is I have a strong direction to go in that fits really nicely into the world and highlighted some real world geography that I can use for inspiration for other things I need to work on! I have enough information to find elements and make it my own while hopefully avoiding any grossly poor characterization and diversifying my cast.

I think this is a pretty good start.

Started doodling a bit in an old sketchbook because January is almost over and while I made progress, I haven't really done what I set out to do yet.

Tried to keep it light and loose, no expectations, just getting something on paper. Kinda trying to emulate the method that the YouTuber I watch for inspiration (not copy her art or her style, just the method she sketches with).

I have not gotten Kina's clothes decided on yet. I still need to brainstorm and get some refs for that, but I think I broke her out of Samefacedom. Scratch that, she's definitely out of Samefacedom. I don't think I've really drawn a proper POC before.. I'm still learning and I wanna do it right, but I think most of my human-faced characters have had pretty generic features. But that's part of the purpose of this project.

Not sure that her face is set yet, but it's close. I still gotta figure out how to draw curly hair. That's always evaded me, too.
