Is this guy a troll or something??
I said ‘don’t get upset when people block you’ and now they’re acting like blocking somebody is the Worst Thing Ever
a new account!
hey, guys! first things first: I’m not leaving tumblr, so don’t panic!
now that that’s out of the way, I want to share with you something I’ve been excited about for a while. I have an account on the new website writscrib, which is a sort of similar site, but very much aimed at helping content creators flourish. I’ve had my account for a while in the closed beta, but they’re moving to an open beta sometime today, and I’d love for some of you to join me and help this new site grow!
to keep this from turning into a huge textwall, I’m gonna do this post in Q&A format.
Q: So what is writscrib, exactly?
A: Writscrib is a site where, like tumblr, you can make posts, reblog things, and just generally hang out and talk about fandoms or original content. however, there are some key differences that are really exciting.
post commenting. you can start comment threads under a post, instead of having to do a big reblog chain if you want to talk about something.
groups. users can create public or private groups to chat about fandoms, ideas, kinks, whatever.
content filtering. writscrib lets you toggle on/off the ability to view three different kinds of posts: NSFW, adults-only content, and view-at-your-own-risk (VAYOR) content for sensitive things that don’t necessarily fit into the first two molds.
chips. a way to tip content creators that I’ll talk about in more detail below!
anti-harassment policies. I’ll also talk more about these below.
there are a lot of other features in the works, so I’d suggest looking on their tumblr page for more info. the site is currently in beta, meaning a lot of the features are still not yet implemented, but the basics are all in place.
Q: What are chips?
A: chips can be purchased from writscrib in bulk, and then “tipped” back to creators in small increments (each chip is worth $0.10 in US currency). you can use paypal or a credit/debit card to purchase them. once creators have enough chips, they can turn them in and have them converted into cash.
by tipping creators, fans are able to give in smaller increments, instead of having to donate large amounts or commission people. there’s also no monthly requirement, so if you don’t like the commitment required to support creators on Patreon, you may like this.
personally, I like it because you can spread your money out further, and tip on specific posts (so you can let people know what sort of stuff you really love). tips can be given out on any sort of post, so even if you don’t write or draw, people can tip you chips just for being funny or kind or whatever they like about you.
Q: So do we have to pay to use writscrib?
A: nope! I’d love to see you on the site even if you don’t intend to spend anything at all. it’s just nice to have the option.
there is going to be the option later on to hide content behind a paywall, but I personally won’t be using it. all fandom content I create will be free to view, period. the only thing I’ll ever charge for are commissions, just because those involve me creating something specifically for you, based on your specifications. plus, only the commissioner pays for those; they’re free to view on my ao3 once completed. that won’t change.
Q: If not just for money, why make the switch?
A: the writscrib team, like you and me, are sad to see how hateful tumblr’s environment has become. they’re dedicated to making sure their site combats bullying and harassment by design.
for example, you need to be logged into an account in order to send anonymous messages. your recipient won’t be able to see who you are, but if you use anon just to send hate, you can still be reported and dealt with by the site admins.
they’ve also stated very emphatically that they don’t stand for the sort of purity policing that happens on tumblr. call-out posts that call people out for liking the “wrong” ships or kinks are not allowed. as long as the content is fictional, they’re fine with it. their detailed filtering system, mentioned above, is intended to help keep people comfortable on their site by making it easy to avoid things you don’t want to see, so why be a dick about that stuff existing on the site, basically?
Q: Great! So, where can I find you/how do I sign up?
A: please follow their tumblr page to catch their open beta announcement, which should be coming out later today. you’ll be able to put your info on a list, and the accounts will be approved in batches, similar to how ao3 works. this is only for the open beta; they’ll have regular signups in the future, but I’m not sure when.
when you’re there, you can find me under the pseudonym missnaya! currently, writscrib works on a mutual follower basis: everyone you follow will follow you by default. this, again, is only for the beta period, to get people acquainted and connected, so if it’s not your cup of tea, you can wait to sign up until after they remove that feature (I believe sometime in February).
I’ve been watching this site’s development for months, and I can tell you that the team is really amazing and very dedicated to providing users with a wonderful website. there are still some kinks to be worked out, as with any new site (especially since they’re working with a small team). still, I hope you’ll join me and help to grow the site, so creators and fans alike can have a place to hang out without fear of running into the sort of toxic atmosphere that scares so many people away from tumblr.
thanks for reading, and I hope to see you all there! I can’t wait to create groups with all of you to talk about sin even more. :)
