Today, I’ve experienced two types of people: one who has THE privilege and proudly used it, and another one, who had the privilege but did not take advantage of it. I went to a grocery store and I followed the line which is for PWD’s and Senior Citizen’s counter. It’s Christmas season so all of the counters are open to anyone. I was already the second one to the cashier. Then one parent called out to his son who was behind me and told him to just excuse himself and explain that he only has one item. Since all of us heard the parent, we let his son go first. It was nothing really. Until this lady came and put her basket in front of mine just ignoring the line behind her. The woman behind me told her companion that we are also waiting in the line, trying to reason to get in line just like us. But her companion said that she is a Senior Citizen. It’s not really a big deal but I think it’s just her attitude that made me cringe. As if she doesn’t care at all, like she’s the senior citizen and she has the right. She need not to explain. She just went on without looking at us or at least excuse herself, then went on proudly with her bag of groceries. I, on the other hand, was smiling to myself because the lady behind me is actually joking about her being also a senior citizen but did not need to be like that. So I went next to the cashier, and paid my items then went on. Just when I was already on the escalator, the lady who was behind me in the line called out to me waving a plastic bag which turned out as the grapes I purchased which I left on the counter. She rode the escalator and reached to me the plastic bag. I felt concerned because she had to leave her groceries, ride the escalator down, then up again (the escalator going up is broken and used as stairs) just to chase me and give me my forgotten item. I told her that I am really sorry and I thanked her for doing that (to think that she can just bring the grapes home since it’s my fault anyway.) I greeted her a Merry Christmas and we are actually laughing because of what happened.
