from the first time I heard "TV off" I knew he was gonna play that at the super bowl. lyrically it just made too much sense to perform it right before or after "not like us."

but one detail from it that I hadn't thought about was this particular line

now this bar is a historical one in hip hop. it was originally in a Notorious B.I.G. song released in 1997 titled "kick In the door," in which biggie stakes his claim as the king of hip hop and anyone else making that claim are beneath him.

This line has been since been reused by a few other notable hip hop legends at times of their careers that they were arguably at the top of the industry. Jay - Z used it in a song titled "H.O.V.A." in 2003. Ice cube then used it in 2006 in a song titled "child support." Both of them were at a point in their careers where they were viewed as the king of rap (maybe not unanimously, but they were firmly in the discussion) and made it known that they personally believed they deserved that title by using this line.

Now since those 2 no one else (as far as I know) have used this line in a song until kendrick did in "TV off." His use, coming right after his very high profile feud with the only other rap artist currently competing with him for the top spot (sorry J cole) feels especially fitting as he now can firmly say that he is the king. He has been saying it for years, but everyone only just finally figured it out.

The fact that he rapped this line on arguably the biggest stage the world has to offer solidifies it.
