New song time! Which is sort of also old song time, because this was a song I originally did back in 2010 and thought, "I could do better now." Struggled pretty hard with parts of it because the violin samples I was using had some crackling artifacts in them that it took me a while to patch up, and then I had to do a bunch of EQ work because the bass was a little too heavy.
After Fear Factory I was asked to do more DKC songs, so here’s Forest Frenzy.
This is one of DKC’s more ambient tracks. You never think about it as you’re listening to them, but a lot of DKC’s soundtrack is very atmospheric. They lack the traditional melody/chorus structure of a lot of video game music of that era. In Forest Frenzy here, you almost get three or four different instruments competing for your attention with different intersecting ditties that come and go, overlapping each other.

It struck me to use a version of Terra’s theme in the Patreon Party People Podcast for this month, but I didn’t want to use the SNES version or any other version I had on hand... so I just spit out an MP3 of my own using a MIDI by King Meteor.
And it turned out... pretty good!
The original version of Marble Countdown was in my Sonic 2006 Shirt video, but since then I’ve gotten better at drums and guitar effects, so I gave it a once over.
I’m actually considering starting to upload my “good” MP3s to Youtube again, but I never know how much interest there would be in that. It always feels weird that these aren’t really “my” songs, because all I’m doing is running someone else’s MIDIs through a lot of nice instruments and effects. I’m never quite sure how proud I should be of this kind of stuff, even though I think I’ve gotten quite good at it over the years.

I realized I haven’t done something like this in a couple months, so I picked a totally random MIDI out of my MIDI stockpile and it ended up coming out like this. I’m not entirely sure how I feel about it, but I get the impression it’s something that’ll have to sink in a little bit because it isn’t “in my comfort zone” if that makes any sense.

And here’s your first song from me for 2019. I’m sort of on the fence for how this turned out. Getting it to sound “full enough” is kind of difficult. It feels like there’s an element missing, and I can’t put it in to words.
The backing instrument at 0:17 was real hard to get “right” and I’m not sure I nailed it. It’s a strange instrument that sounds kind of like a heavily filtered piano, to me. In the MIDI file, it was given to a sitar. I couldn’t get the piano to sound right and a sitar definitely didn’t fit in my mind, so I went with a nylon guitar buried under effects. It works, but I’ve spent the whole afternoon and most of the night poking at this, so I think I’ve reached a point where I’m too close to it for it to make sense anymore.

Just monkeying around with random stuff. This came out sort of okay, so I tried doing other Goldeneye music and that ended up sounding kind of crap, so I won’t post it. You win some, you lose some.
