Since Aberon (and Surda in general) is already heavily roman/hellenic-coded, I propose that King Orrin, with his amethyst rings and an opulent crown, should be best imagined as wearing Byzantine imperial regalia, thanks for coming to my TED talk.

IC AU, where Orrin is not that nice, so he gets fed up with the varden treating him and Surda like shit, so he takes his soldiers and goes home
Something I stumbled across thanks to @tonhalszendvics;
At one point Orrin calls Galbatorix the 'black foe'. Which some might know is the meaning of Morgoth - the big bad of the Silmarillion. Now, one could say that Paolini was simply nabbing a little, but I raise the suggestion;
Orrin dropped those words as an easteregg, in an attempt to find fellow Silmarillion/Lord of the Rings fans. And got super disappointed because Murtagh wasn’t around.
Hiii! For the character ask, if you want to :3 Questions 4, 22 and 26 for Galbatorix! (And a bonus 20 for Orrin if you feel like it uwu)
For Galbatorix:
4. If you could put this character in any other media, be it a book, a movie, anything, what would you put them in?
Aaaah very tempted to throw him into the world of Cyberpunk 77 because he really fits in there with his thinking and methods. Plus, him being a rogue AI taking over the body of an unlucky netwatch agent, lives rent-free in my head still. And he'd look cool with electrifying monowire hehe. (He would also make a great mage in the witcher universe :3).
22. If you're a fic reader, what's something you like in fics when it comes to ths character? Something you don't like?
If it's a more canon adhering fic, I like him being written with at least glimpses to who he once was. We only know that he was a very promising student/prodigy and highly praised, plus in the end Vrael still hesitated to kill him. Thus, if it's a not so canon adhering fic, I like to see his less traumatized version that doesn't want to see everyone dead. Also; all the tiny details of course. Hints to where he grew up and his nine siblings and also Jarnunvösk. There should be more fics with him and jarnunvösk ;w;
Probably unnecessary to say, but I don't like him being written as a cartoonish evil guy, or doing things so illogical that it can't even be explained by his insanity. Also, if he's written as 'evil' in modern AUs and the like. Sure he won't be an angel maybe, but the cruelty gained from his traumas in canon make no real sense in there.
26. What's something the character has done you can't get over? Be it something funny, bad, good, serious, whatever?
Hm. I guess all his bad deeds get a bit flat since he simply is set up to be the antagonist and thus it's expected. What I do keep staying glued on is how often he hints more ore less subtly on how much his wrong with him. It's almost funny in a dark way (like the 'a little bit of torture never did me any harm; it shapes character' comment towards Nasuada).
For Orrin:
20. Which other character is the ideal best friend for this character, the amount of screentime they share doesn't matter?
Trianna. It was simply so funny that he and her randomly went experimenting and discovered some new gases together. And it's not like he didn't have his own mages. So yeah, I feel that they get along quite well :D
okay so King Orrin’s personality change during the Inheritance cycle kinda seemed bizarre to me. But I’m rereading the books rn and I just got to Orrin’s introduction. And like. Nasuada mentions his laboratory smelling of metallic vapors. Orrin is handling mercury without gloves and in an open tube
the chemist in me is cringing. What are the odds that Orrin’s given himself lead or mercury poisoning or something
For bingo, Orrin!
@umunschaas they fell asleep researching who knows what (Orrin snores)
Since I'm not allowing myself to start another Murtagh/Orrin fic, I started drawing them for the IC dragon AU instead.
Take that brain.
