Hiya! Quick post to help you navigate in this cosy corner I made on this hellsite. I mean, it would be cosy if I would follow my own tagging rules. I don’t.

6. what's your go-to recipe when you want to make something that requires minimal effort?

Good thing you say that, because I already greatly dislike cooking, so I sure don't count anything as minimal effort if there are pots getting involved xD But to name something where I actually do more than just shove a pizza in the oven (if I have a gluten free one at hand); Toast with cheese and chicken or salami or whatever the fridge coughs up. If you feel fancy, you put the toast with the cheese into the oven (basically Toast Hawaii but I don't like pineapple lol). Otherwise; use toaster and slap everything on it when the toast is still hot.

29. do you have houseplants and how are you at keeping them alive?

I have one odd aloe-vera relative which came in a bottle and now can't be removed without potentially breaking the bottle. Thanks to it being a succulent and I'm being good at not watering plants, we both don't annoy each other. A tiny bit of water once a month. That's all. There isn't even much dirt at the bottom and it existed like that for at least 7 years now I think? There's a tiny silver christmas ornament tangled in the roots tho, since I got that thing for christmas and it was sitting on top... well not anymore; it's the plant's now and I won't take it from them (not like I could get anything in there besides very long pincers anyway). Idk. I'm just glad that it's not demanding, doesn't smell and doesn't attract insects. Good roommate.

I had one (eins, 1) and it got removed, for it was be like, “what if I try to grow into another tooth” and it waited for no-one. I did not appreciate neither the tooth, nor the procedure. 🙃

23. what's the coolest place you've visited?

Technically, the front garden of my childhood home when it was -20°C.

Jokes aside, I was trying to dig up anything from my memories. The only thing bubbling up again and again is a memory from when I was 5 or 6, maybe. My family went to visit the Aggtelek Karst, and we had a tour in Baradla Cave. Part of the tour was a light-show while playing this music, and ummm, did you know that playing music in a cave adds something to it that here I am, fucking decades later, listening to the music, tearing up and still seeing the light reflecting on the stalagmites…

okay, so maybe it left an impression on young me lol

how does human riders "elvification" work tho. I mean, they slowly change and then boom, they look like a half-elf. With Brom's example, I'd say this is a temporary buff, since he gave no sign of being any different from a human while he was with Eragon. But maybe he spent too little time with Saphira I. Nah, that doesn't work, someone told Murtagh that he had this elvish vibe to him, and he and Thorn are bonded for how long, three years at top? So Brom had to have it well from the age of ten until whenever the battle of Vroengard was.

Anyhow, I was thinking about whether this change is acting like a temporary or a permanent spell, or does it change the rider's DNA. Because then how come that Eragon and Murtagh looked fully human in the beginning, huh?

The explanation that always cane to my mind (which is also the logic I apply to shapeshifters in my own setting) is that all the cells in the modified form are still the same as before, only in a different shape. The protein encoding for that fluffy blue fur on your back doesn't come from your cells' original nuclei, but is code-enforced by a mostly passive magic spell that hijacks the ribosomes.

As for modifying bone structure; once you encourage the bones to grow in a certain direction, or more simply, magically induce calcification to create long fangs or spiny knuckles, the bone just stays that way.

Ear cartilage changing shape? Limbs growing slightly longer? Feathers? Actually, feathers are probably easiest to make by modifying your hair to take a different structure, but wouldn't be functional for flight of any kind if that were the case.

As for childrearing, I suppose the children would be fundamentally human, since your DNA doesn't change. You could, however, enact a spell that carries your changes over to the child, but that sounds too risky to put into practice. You might end up misdirecting biological energy that was intended to, for example, properly develop some important internal organs.

Very much agreeing on it not being a DNA thing but instead as above. Plus it's dragon magic and that canonically doesn't need logic lol.

As for Brom; the guy was said to be really good at disguising himself. And he was said to have very bushy brows and a long beard which should work well to hide more elven face-structure a bit. And ears can be magically shortened I guess. To put it short; I wouldn't use Brom as a measurement for anything in that regard. The white-grey hair and grey beard might just as well be spell-caused to lean into his old man role more.

With Galbatorix we don’t get much hints towards it either, but he certainly isn't described as ugly. And I don’t believe that he'd magically enhance his looks, like dying his hair or smoothing out wrinkles. He's not ashamed of having beaten Vrael by kicking him in the nuts, so I don’t think he knows much shame. (Plus, Nasuada described him as broad but not thick, while Eragon said that he looked like he didn’t eat well, which he likely would have masked if he was focused on his looks much).

Which also leads me to; I think the change is started of with the bond forming and doesn't stop with the dragon dying. Like, it's something more universal that goes past an individual pair.

Indeed! Let's hope we get more evidence in the next installment - Murtagh's changes should start to kick in over time!

I've actually been pondering if Morzan might have had some elven heritage. Not like being a half-elf, more like quarter or less even. But it would also explain why Murtagh looks elven enough so quickly that some random person notices it in bad lighting. Plus how he started using magic and spells so fast.

And Morzan was said to be the strongest of the forsworn, which is odd considering that he and Galbatorix were still really "young" then. And we know that Galbatorix preferred to keep his eldunarya collection to himself, so that can't really be it I think. If Morzan was really talented and had maybe a little bit of elvish boost, that would at least offer a hint of an explanation. Plus he was tall and had no beard xD (Had to think of Bachel though and how she was described as very tall for a woman and also her using magic with a flick of her wrist despite never being formally educated.)

I have to confess - I'm still halfway through Murtagh. Mostly because I have to stop every few pages to put the book down so I don't stain it with tears.

But I just got past Bachel's introduction, and there is SO MUCH going on!

I'm almost fully convinced that Christopher Panini is preparing the groundwork for some "Ancient Seed" reveal for the origin of dragons and magic.

Totally agree on Morzan having partial elvish heritage!

It's on reddit too, but I don't set a foot on there if I can avoid it. Also I'd love to have an official map with the updated borders; with Surda doubled in size and Teirm being independent (wondering how much surrounding land Teirm got).

Lake Isenstar was kinda fixed, with changing the direction of Ramr, and connecting Isenstar to Leona Lake. Woadark Lake still looks weird, so either Leona has two rivers going out of it, or Woadark...

Honestly, what do you guys think is the actual reason for Galbatorix' poor nutrition? Because he IS described as broad and thick, and yet he's thinner on the face— what I'm particularly referring to is Eragon's comment on how Galbatorix seemed to have stuck to an extremely narrow variety of food for years. But why? He isn't malnourished, but he doesn't seem to care about a detailed health.

There's only a very narrow timespan between Nasuada's description of him as 'broad but not fat and Eragon's of him being very narrow in the face and waist. And since we know that eating/weight is kinda correlating with magic strenght/effort, I assume that he did some kind of strong magic and spellwork in the background which we don’t know of (yet?) and which took a lot of energy. Perhaps it even was something where he couldn’t use his enslaved eldunarya as an energy source, or only in limited amounts, because he didn’t want them to blab about it (in case of him losing and/or the eldunarya getting in contact with someone else).

Could also be due to him being a mental mess. Maybe he has one single comfort food and eats only that during bad days.

That's a good theory!

I was under the impression that he was simply casting so MANY spells that even with the eldunarya he was depleting his body's reserves. I imagine, given what we know about his obsessive personality:

He probably spreads his use around his sources of power (including the eldunarya and his own body's generation) so that each one has capcaity to fill. He probably has a few extra gemstones lying around, to make sure that no source of generation is ever idle.

Also consider; even if he isn't undereating (I do think he is) merely handling that much energy on a regular basis and balancing it around to all his various reserves (how much of it was he continuously pouring into Shruikan's growth?) would have taken a toll on his body.

(I actually like the thought that Torix did a lot of experiments and research and later on his writings actually get used as sources, with the one citing it doing so with gritted teeth and a constant disclaimer of 'please don't experiment on yourself or other (unwilling) people' x'D)
