“ATM,” is J. Cole’s latest single from his newly released album, KOD, an acronym for King Overdose, Kids on Drugs, and Kill Our Demons. It was released on 4/20, appropriately if you ask me. It’s a trippy video, with Cole floating into the sky on a sleigh-like vehicle and those dazed eyes. It bugged me out when I saw it because it was totally jarring and unexpected. Anyway, I thought this was a perfect debut single from the album, given that the album’s concept is about addiction to all kinds of substances, even more perfect that it was released on a day notorious for smoking a bunch of weed and getting stoned out of your mind. My favorite scene in the music video is when the mini version of Cole is in a bag counting money and a hand reaches down expectantly and getting pricked. My theory is that it’s in relation to how deep down a dark path an addiction could lead you, to where you start doing things you never thought you would just to feed that high, including selling and having someone you owe things to, or even the people that betray you or use you for their own agenda in the depths of your addiction. This is a dope music video and the album is pretty good.
