Power Rangers
Lightning Collection
Mighty Morphin King Sphinx
King Sphinx was one of Rita Repulsa’s monsters on the first season of Power Rangers. I don’t even remember the episode.
The toy comes with:
-King Sphinx (obviously)
-A pair of wings
-Gripping fist (R) and closed fist (L)
-Staff
-Lightning effect
Once you get this guy put together this feels like a really dense toy. He stands a bit taller than your average 6in figure; he’s probably closer to 7in.
The detail, and face sculpt on King Sphinx is really nice, and I’m digging that evil grin.
He holds the staff well in his right hand and the lightning effect is a nice touch once paced over the staff.
He pose fairly well, and can stand with some tweaking; his left ankle joint is a little loose, but ultimately I didn’t have a lot of stability issues.
His shoulder pads and loin cloth are soft plastic and does hinder his articulation a little bit, but you can work with it.
I didn’t think I was going to get him to do the one leg balance, but I did. I figured the weight and the wings were going to work against it.
Accessories:
A close up of the gripping hand and the closed fist. I don’t like the sculpting of the closed fist. When it’s attached to his arm it just looks too small.
Wing Fix:
So my copy of King Sphinx had, what I think a production error. The right wing wouldn’t peg into the shoulder blade area. It just wouldn’t stay in at all; what I think the issue was that the hole was too thick for the wing peg to clear it, so it wasn’t catching.
What I ended up doing was using an exact-o blade and scraping the interior of the hole as best I could. I might have done too good of a job because now the wing does stay pegged in, but if you move the toy around too much it’ll fall out.
But that’s still better than not pegging in at all, I suppose.
Final Thoughts:
King Sphinx is a fun bad guy for the Power Rangers. This toy line brings a lot to the table when it comes to the variety of villains that Bandai just never bothered with for some reason.
Aside from the quality control issue I had it’s still cool!
He did not catch the red dot

A Couple Years of The Lightning Collection
Despite it being pretty much my absolute favorite tv show for a time back in the ’90s–particularly 7th/8th grade–I never really had any of the TOYS from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. I had a fair bit of licensed stuff–folders, paper pads, stuff with imagery from the show–but other than a McDonald’s White Ranger/Falconzord from the movie, it wasn’t really until maybe 2009/20010 or so that I got a…
