BLKNWS was initially born out of the Underground Museum, first imagined by Joseph and [Academy award-winning filmmaker] Ryan Coogler as an antidote to cable news during President Trump’s 2015 campaign. It was conceived as a continuous, curated broadcast, weaving news and social media clips, and cultural artifacts into a dynamic stream intended to reflect the richness of Black life. After success as an art installation, the project now takes the form of Kahlil’s debut feature 'BLKNWS: Terms & Conditions.'"

Blacktronika is honored to partner with Summerstage for two significant events in New York City, Central Park and Harlem’s Marcus Garvey Park.

The Central Park (Aug. 16 4PM) program will feature an ‘eclectrifying’ DJ set from King Britt B2B Charlie Dark, a spiritual house set by Brooklyn’s Joe Claussell, the debut live performance of Detroit icon Waajeed, an uplifting set from Detroit’s Rimarkable, and a live headlining performance by acid house pioneers Phuture & Dj Pierre from Chicago.

The Harlem (Aug 17 - Marcus Garvey Park, 5PM) program will present a distinguished tribute to the legendary #PaulRobeson, featuring Dr. Shana Redmond, Vijay Iyer, and LaFrae Sci. Additional performances include an improvisational set from Brooklyn’s Sonic Messengers, a debut collaboration between visionary artists Joy Guidry and Niecey Blues, and an exploration of the Black Quantum Futurism universe (Camae Ayewa and Rasheedah Phillips).

We invite you to join us for two transformative days of intellectual and artistic engagement, celebrating the convergence of mind and Black sound.

Blacktronika : #AfrofuturismInElectronicMusic is a college course, created by @KingBritt for the University of California San Diego, that honors all the pioneers of color that continue to contribute to the advancement of electronic music. The class has included everyone from Herbie Hancock to Moor Mother to Flying Lotus.

The etymology of the word Blacktronika stems from the original #Blacktronica events of the early 2000s curated by London’s #CharlieDark. With his blessing we utilized the name for the permanent course which has turned into a festival as of last year, with events at UC San Diego and MoCA / Geffen Contemporary in Los Angeles.

For this edition of the festival we are honored to have a stellar line up. This includes, the legendary hip hop heroes, #AntipopConsortium, aligning perfectly with the 50th Anniversary of Hip Hop, an exclusive live beat set by the magical #OrionSun, whose following may not know this side of her. Pulitzer Prize winner, Dr. Tyshawn Sorey and Professor King Britt will perform live together, reflecting the critically acclaimed album Tyshawn & King, exploring rhythms like you have never heard. Intergalactic lover and artist, Vikter Duplaix will be spinning his late night “across the board” sounds. Charlie Dark MBE of Attica Blues fame (and original Blacktronica) will be taking us on a music journey across the globe with his iconic, no frills approach to djing. King Britt will give an emotional 3hrs set as only he can do and last but not least, global sonic icon, #MariaChavez will dj outside and inside, giving us a taste of her vast knowledge and dance floor skills (yes dance floor selections for the inside set).

In The Nursery we will have the live day time component. In the evening we take over Public Records for the DJ focused portion.

There will also be a beautiful panel on the history of @Blacktronika w/ @kingbritt @daddydarkrdc moderated by @vikterduplaix.

Reposted from @kingbritt Extremely proud to present a new course I created at @ucsdmusic : Blacktronika : Afrofuturism in Electronic Music .. As someone who has been a continuous sonic creator in the movement, I plan to not only present facts but also personal stories, through music, video and photos from my archive. An excerpt from the course description : “ In this course, Blacktronika : Afrofuturism in Electronic Music (the word Blacktronika comes from an Afrofuturist series in the early 2000’s in London), we will explore the lineage of many of the groundbreaking black, electronic artists who have been integral but overlooked in the development & commodification of house, techno, drum & bass and experimental music. These musics were developed with sociopolitical movements at the foundation of the sounds. These ideals have been lost as the genres became popular through the appropriation of sonic structures. EDM and European techno, owe everything to Detroit but most of those artists have never heard of Jeff Mills, Underground Resistance or Juan Atkins. I will structure the class, discussing the technology available at the time, the sociopolitical movements happening and the tipping point at which the music broke into global phenomena. I will start in the 70’s. Coinciding with the class will be a series of guest speakers throughout the course to come in (or Skype) for workshops and performances (either here or at The Loft and various venues on campus).” Time to sign up!
