Look familiar? Past and present merge again!
This is the structure that you said you wanted to learn more about! So what is it? And why is it so significant that it is on Israeli currency today?
You might be familiar with the popular Grecian Doric columns that decorate many of our buildings today!
This kind of column is known as a Proto-Aeolic Capital - a style typical to the Phonecian empire in the north.
But what is a Phonecian style capital doing in Jerusalem?
Soon after David became king of Israel, Hiram, the Phoenician king of Tyre, sent craftsmen and materials to help build his palace: “And Hiram king of Tyre sent messengers to David, and cedar-trees, and carpenters, and masons; and they built David a house.” (II Samuel 5:11) This is where they found the kingly capital!
Archaeologist Dr. Eilat Mazar z”l, carbon dated the structure surrounding the area where the capital was found, from olive pits she found which dated to the time of 1000 BCE - the time of King David. These and other finds from the site led to her famous proclamation that she had found King David’s palace!
