~"That you, Little Bird, belong to the sky. And that the sky... it belongs to me."~ House of Beating Wings
Book Review - House of Pounding Hearts
Highly recommend series - 4 Stars out of 5
The story picks up in the Sky Kingdom, where Fallon Rossi is kept safe after resurrecting the crow king, Lorcan. She learns more of the prophecy for the Crows and her true origins.
*SPOILERS AHEAD*
The main character’s (Fallon Rossi) personality seems to drastically change from the first book. Her thought process was frustrating to read throughout the story. This story was supposed to build upon their connection introduced in the first installment. Fallon rejects her mate and becomes upset with the notion of him moving on with someone else. The mating ritual of the Crows removes a person’s free will to choose their romantic partner, which explains Lorcan’s objectification of the protagonist. The king views Fallon as his property rather than her own independent being, making it hard to root for them.
As for the writing style, the author’s vocabulary is strong and doesn’t waste time on long-winded descriptions. For example, Olivia is able to paint a fascinating world without boring readers with unnecessary details. She’s great with pacing the world-building information consistently without overwhelming them with it. Additionally, this technique allows you to truly think about the series even after putting it down for the day.
Overall, the war brewing between mythical creatures remains captivating for its readers and creates anticipation for them to see it unfold. As for the amorous pairing, hopefully Lore’s perception of soulmates will change later in the series. The domineering alpha male who wants all control and masking him as “protective” is a common trope in fantasy romance novels, which some may view as problematic.
Kinktober #16: Masks
Second Kingdom of Crows ficlet (this is pretty SFW as well)
Masquerade balls were, Kageyama thought, an unfortunate symptom of castle life.
They were entirely frivolous, but didn’t come bundled with any actual fun activities, like sports or practice duels or horseback riding. There was only dancing, dancing, and more dancing, of which everyone was expected to take part. There was, on the positive side, the food, which was always sumptuous and abundant. But every time he tried to get near the banquet tables, he was inevitably cornered by yet one more person, seeking the attention of the young prince, asking him to join them for a quick dance.
Then they would talk. They all talked, and talked, about things he didn’t care about; court gossip and city building plans and prospects of marriage, though he hoped that was a long way off yet. All of it was boring, but the worst part of it were the masks.
There wasn’t a single uncovered human face in the hall. They were hidden by gilding or feathers or metal, animal and celestial and abstract, with just the eyes peering out, glinting from the holes. They whirled around him in their endless dancing, emotionless and still.
Kageyama was not very good at reading people. It was a skill many people told him he would have to learn, before he became king. For once he was, he would be able to take no one at their word. All would want something from him, but be willing to give very little in return.
But Kageyama found it hard to decipher meaning from eyes and voice and body language. And on nights like these, with masks obscuring the faces of all those he talked to, it became harder than ever. All was just words, and words, and noise; laughter too loud, people dancing too close, the smell of wine too strong. He wanted, more than anything, to escape.
“Why don’t you just leave?” someone asked him, and he was shaken out of his thoughts. He turned.
Standing in front of him was someone new, wearing a mask that seemed in opposition to his own simple black one. Their mask was gold, covering the top half of the face, with a pair of soaring antlers that tapered into wicked points. In between the mask’s eye slots was a brilliant golden sun.
Kinktober #14: Role Reversal
Set early on in Kingdom of Crows verse! This is about 0.02% sexy, and idk what the rest is besides dramatic scene setting/Kageyama being extremely in love
They called it “The City”, sometimes.
It was in jest; because it was anything but. The underground maze of tunnels, sewers, and dungeon-like halls beneath Corvus had no infrastructure, no rhyme or reason to the wretchedness.
The Kingdom of Crows thrived upon madness, breathed life into chaos.
Amidst the rabble, Kageyama felt like he could finally make sense of things again. He pulled his hood further over his head, hiding his face in shadows. Suspicious, perhaps, but the more suspicious he appeared down below the surface, the less people would question him. Everyone minded their own business, as long as he minded his own. No one cared about a lanky boy in patched clothes wandering about, when there were so many others just like him at every turn. No one might guess who he truly was.

Uploaded 2017 Kinktober prompt #14: Role Reversal and #16: Masks to AO3! Both are set in the Kingdom of Crows verse (and are pretty sfw). All the prompts are being put into this collection!
'Hinata strode on before him—back straight, head held high. He was not tall, by any means, but he'd always taken up space. Two children ran forward upon their entrance, and Hinata stopped, lowering himself to one knee. They put his gold crown on his head, and his cloak on his back—black and torn, like crow feathers.
Kageyama saw suddenly, like a vision, an impression of the man Hinata would grow into. It seemed right, that Hinata should wear a crown, now, and in the future.'
--
Kageyama begins to understand the true weight of the crown.

Kingdom of Crows: The Golden Mask
'Mask or not, Kageyama knew who it was without a doubt; there weren't many people that small, with hair that red.
"What are you doing here?" he hissed, as Hinata stepped closer to him, to take his hands and fall easily into another dance. "You can't be in the castle!"
"Where there's parties, there's food!" Hinata sang, as though that were good enough reason for risking his very life.'
--
Hinata's rebellion has been keeping him and Kageyama apart, but a masquerade ball provides a perfect opportunity around their separation, however brief.

I was stuck in traffic and listening to Carry Your Throne the whole way and now I really want to talk about Kingdom of Crows headcanons so I’m going to do that! The timeline of this AU will be intentionally vague and nonchronological, so spoilers aren’t really a thing, but if you want to know nothing more until the actual fics are written, skip this
It did occur to me that part of my reasoning for connecting this song so strongly with KOC (best acronym) is because of things I haven’t actually written yet, but that the second verse basically describes??
Try to break inside the walls with // These lies but I'm pulling up the draw bridge // We rose this love from the dirt now // Set fire to the sky watch it burn down It's a ceremony but the crowd's gone // And you got nothing but my crown on
Okay! So Hinata in this AU is part-fae, and mixed blood like Hinata’s is widely maligned/distrusted amongst humans, and people like him are enormously discriminated against in Corvus. So these people, along with the other dregs of society, have formed this network underneath the kingdom, known as the Kingdom of Crows.
So Kageyama, raised as the crown prince of this kingdom, has been taught to hate Hinata’s kind as well, but he meets Hinata when they’re both children, and they bond, and fall in love. But most of their formative years -> teenagers, both sides (the Corvus nobility/thieves’ guild) either don’t know of their relationship, or are trying to tear it down.
SO that first line of the verse basically is entirely descriptive of all that plot, with everyone telling Kageyama all these lies about Hinata’s kind, and he just wants to bring Hinata into his court as his equal :’) And they are both willing to go through anything to do that.
AS FOR the second part..... so it’s only mentioned once outright in the fic, and perhaps went unnoticed because “consort” is not a very commonly used word in this sense, but by the time The Lost Knight takes place, KageHina are actually married. They are married on the same day as Kageyama’s coronation, and the same day he knights Hinata.
And after the very long and very elaborate celebrations, they celebrate in private... and I had a very very clear image of Hinata running around their enormous bedroom wearing nothing but Kageyama’s billowing cloak and crown <3 AND THEN I HEARD THE SONG!!!!
Anyways there’s some thoughts, oops. Can’t wait to write for this verse again \o/
(1/2) omg ok so i was hesitant about reading hunger just because i wasn't familiar with omega verse and i thought it was gonna be a weird furry thing but i was like. you know what. i trust esselley 100% and i see so many good reviews and BOOOY you do NOT disappoint. i am in love with it so much??? i'm pretty sure you can write anything and ill fall in love with it.
1: Aha… laughing, right, I think it is understandable to believe Hunger would lean towards the furry side of things considering its A) omega-verse and then I also B) gave the roles actual animal names heyyy~ Thanks for checking it out <3
(Right, so for anyone who hasn’t read that series thus far due to wondering about that, the only character that has fur in it is an actual wolf, and her relationship with KageHina is strictly platonic. There, now go read it!)
2: you may absolutely always recommend songs and FUNNILY ENOUGH I just got that song on my spotify playlist this week! *squints* Are you my spotify playlist curator, anon?
Anyway, I loved it!!!! I actually saved it to my Kingdom of Crows playlist lolllll but it’s ALSO super fitting for Hunger, you are so right!
almost done with this one…… shaken to my core tbh
