it's been two days since i finished my rewatch (and my friends who watched first time watch) of eah and i can't stop thinking about the queer undertones of darling and apple's stories individually but also as a ship.
like apple is literally the poster child of the comphet curse. the way she speaks about her destiny being this secure and easy thing because it's what is expected of her. "predetermined princes" making is so she doesn't have to choose for herself and potentially choose wrong. the pressure from her mom to be the perfect girl. not good. just perfect in the eyes of everyone else regardless of how it makes her feel. regardless of what she wants. apple keeping daring waiting to be an official couple because they have "forever after to be together" reminds me of keeping my high school bf waiting to date because we are "too young" but she like me was still invested in her friends relationships cause she didn't really think they needed to wait she just didn't want to do it then. she never saught daring out for company or when something was going wrong. she looked to raven. raven who was everything she was not. raven who believes in finding and making your own destiny. raven who doesn't see an issue with dating outside of your rebel or royal assignment. raven who believes in following your heart. raven who looks out for apple the way she wants to be looked after. raven who makes apple understand in time that choosing to love and live how she wants isn't a bad thing.
then there's darling. darling charming who was inspired by raven to make her own destiny but did so quietly. darling who may not even really be choosing her destiny but living the one her charming name predetermined for her, she just happened to be born a girl and thus society tried to make her into a princess when she was really a knight. darling who spends all of her time helping damsels in distress instead of being one, protecting other girls and living her life by the rules and honor of the sword. darling who's characterization reminds me of the broad strokes of part of what it means to be butch. on top of this we never once see her being courted by or attempting to flirt with or even dance with a boy at any point. her only almost romantic interactions are with the other girls. even in wonderland when she is the white knight and could easily have been written an enemies to lovers with the red knight, she only interacts with him to help the girls with their quest and protect them from courtly. darling who brings up the idea of her not being a girl in need of saving to her brother who has a very black and white understanding of gender roles. darling who is the one who actually saves apple, like her brother was meant to. darling who was the only one not to stand around and panic but to come up with a solution. darling who's lips touched apples and broke the curse before she even stopped her from choking. darling charming who was there to support apple in all of her ideas and quests, and always seemed to have a special interest in apple in how she always lurked on the outskirts of whatever her and her friend group was doing. darling who challenged apple during the dragon games and pushed her to embrace a new more daring side of herself. darling the natural protector and caretaker who is undeniably the prince apple has been waiting her whole life for.
posting my edit here too cause ive been thinking about this all day today

and ive heard a lot of theories of where michaela ran off to at the end of the newest season but my favorite is her going back to scottland because if u think about it she's not really running away she just ran to her room and shut the door to be dramatic because francesca can find her there and she HAS to remember that. it would also just be interesting for fran to go track her down there angry that she went back on her promise to stay and take care of each other, momentarily thinking she's escaped a home haunted with memories of john only to return to another haunted with the same memories plus WHATEVER HAPPENED IN SCOTTLAND that reminds her of why she tried to make herself hate mich in the first place. them reconnecting in a place they can't escape from their feelings but that's also the only place they can really fully be themselves away from the eyes of the ton and fran's family. to have the space to rediscover each other and actually start to heal and let themselves fall in love yeah... yeah.....
doing a eah and ouat cross over on tomogachi life (with some adjustments) because now i can make everyone gay
and growing up is realizing that a simple switched destinys or switched at birth read of raven and apple is simply not gonna cut it because both are selfish and both are inherently good in their own ways in this essay i will-
