hi there!! we will be reblogging everything before and on September 15. You can still post stuff under the tag #bktdweek18_vol2 after that date, but we won’t be reblogging anything after that
At two in the morning on a Tuesday, we hashtag the end of one of the most prolific girl groups in kpop history: witnessing a break-up two years in the making from thousands of miles away through a computer screen.
(This is a piece I felt like I really needed to write since 2NE1 has basically been the foundation of my kpop existence. It’s long.)
It’s 11:22PM on a Tuesday night, my window is blocked with spring dust and my fan hums a quiet rhythm. It’s been almost 24 hours since YG Entertainment confirmed rumors that Minzy would not be re-signing. “2NE1 will continue as a three-membered group,” the press statement said. My eyes blurred but not enough to miss the lies sprinkled in about a ‘summer comeback’.
I exist in the virtual k-pop fandom, alleys on twitter and tumblr that teem with young fans inhaling fan-based fiction, fan-taken photos, fan-made gifs. We consume on youtube, throw around proverbial spears on twitter, create on tumblr. We see everything through a glass screen.
So, I got the news on social media. I scrolled onto rumors of Minzy shopping for contracts, tweets about YG’s press conference to discuss 2NE1′s future. They must have leaked that Minzy info, I thought. They set up this press conference too quickly.
Around midnight and two hours before the press conference is supposed to take place, tweets fly around of confirmation. Minzy is leaving the group.
Where are the translations? Where is the source? Isn’t the press conference in two hours?
Fan-translators quickly post screen caps of official YG articles, translations typed out on iPad note apps. K-pop sites, as they always do, trickle out news much slower.
But it’s all there. Minzy is leaving. 2NE1 is no longer a 4-membered group. My girls – the ones I had grown up with, the ones that had steered me into the strangely comforting world of k-pop – had joined the ranks of DBSK, SNSD, Super Junior, Exo, 2PM, and the Wonder Girls. An eternally missing spot amongst the line-up.
Within seconds, tirades explode on twitter. My timeline moves so fast, my notifications fill up with such fervor that it overwhelms and crashes my phone. I open up my computer in order to spill out my thoughts. No reserve, palms sweaty, my shoulders ache. It’s almost like throwing up.
My tweets garner 100,000+ impressions in 24 hours. ‘Minzy’ trends worldwide. Someone on my tl says we should trend ‘#fuckyg”. Hashtags like #SupportingYouMinzy #ThankYouMinzy #In2NE1WeTrust start floating around. I use them all. We use hashtags to mark movements now, non? To memorialize important moments in popular culture.

Many people are angry at many things. I’m angry at YG. Other people are angry at the girls. Someone, somewhere is angry that we care so much. My timeline is full of rational, eloquent people so I keep reading and tweeting for an hour. We all tweet for an hour. We commiserate through our computer screens, find comfort between the letters as we pull to reload. We share anger and frustration, barely reply to each other but we see other people think, feel, reel, hate, and hurt like we do. It makes us feel better.
The saddest part is that it isn’t surprising. Minzy removed 2NE1 from her instagram bio when YG first announced CL’s debut in America. YGE had to release an official statement that it meant nothing. She added it back in. It isn’t a big deal, people said. Sitting on the edge of my bed, I remember talking to my sister about it for so long. It’s a big deal, we agreed. After Bom’s scandal and YG’s pattern of neglect and his preference for hiatuses, it’s a big deal. Minzy is saying something. We should listen.
2NE1 doesn’t promote for two years. It isn’t new for Blackjacks. 2NE1 is on hiatus for half their career so we grit our teeth and bare with it. K-netizens pulverize Bom’s reputation and make it so she must feel scared to even leave her house. CL moves to America and none of us know what she’s doing but we like watching her do it. Dara moves onto variety and acting like we all know she would. She’s the only one that consistently posts pictures with the other girls. This isn’t 2NE1, but we’ll take it for now.
Their comeback is some sort of dream unicorn. Maybe it’ll happen, maybe it won’t but we all hold out hope that it will. YG Entertainment is Big Bang, but 2NE1 plays a huge role too. 2NE1 is wildly successful. 2NE1 is a genre of girl group in their own right. 2NE1 should come back.
But we know, deep down, YG isn’t as forgiving with 2NE1 as he is with Big Bang. 2NE1 is a risky investment at this point and he won’t go out on a limb for them. CL is going to make English music anyway, Dara is finally doing what she’s always wanted anyway, Bom gets to be away from the hate. Anyway. We convince ourselves to put up with the minimal effort YG puts into this girl group. This girl group that deserves the world. Because there are so many moving parts and it’s not the right time. Days turn to weeks turn to years. And again, we have another never-ending hiatus where we just accept that one of the best girl groups in k-pop is nowhere to be seen.
All the while, Minzy travels on her own to dance studios in LA. She posts self-composed music onto instagram. She goes to school. She does well at all that she attempts. But she doesn’t release music. She isn’t on tv shows. YG invests nothing in Minzy for two years. But did they promote her at all during 2NE1′s 7-year career? Did she ever get a solo for herself even when the group was at its peak?
She doesn’t post pictures with the other girls. She doesn’t promote the other girls’ solo endeavors. When CL posts a screen cap of the girls facetiming for Bom’s birthday, Minzy isn’t there. I watch everything through a glass screen and my scalp prickles at the thought that something might be wrong.
So, on April 5th it doesn’t come as a surprise that Minzy leaves YG. She can do better. She can find somewhere that will utilize her talents. She wants to save her career and she is strong for doing what she does.
But we still explode. Twitter is set ablaze, tumblr throws out all it has, soompi releases articles about 2NE1′s future as if their writers are new kpop fans that don’t see how obvious it is that 2NE1 will never promote again. YG releases lies of a summer comeback to try to placate fans. We don’t care. We’ve learned not to believe anything the company says.
How are we still fans of a company that forces one of its most promising artists from one of its most successful groups to leave?
Minzy was, to a lot of us, a quiet steady presence. She was always there and she was always going to be there. She was the backbone of the songs and stage presence, arguably the most talented member. She was with YG for eleven years. She was unbreakable. So she, of course, had the strength to walk away when she knew her career wasn’t in good hands.
We talk about all of this through clacking keyboards and florescent lights behind glass screens. For a while.
After a few hours, the tweets slow down. Tumblr simmers. Minzy stops trending worldwide. I guess we have to move on or maybe it’s late and we all decide to go to bed.
Thousands of miles away from where Minzy and the other girls of 2NE1 must be sitting and contemplating the last seven years of their lives, we slink away from the virtual world of kpop and sink back into ours. Walk away from our computers and phones, and exhale the weight of hashtags and virtual rants.
And we go back to a world where 2NE1 is, essentially, over. The saddest part is that we come to accept and move on much quicker because our everyday lives do not change. Not in real life, not in this virtual world. The loss is devastating, but this isn’t much different from what the last two years have been like for 2NE1 fans. In a sense, even thousands of miles away we could see what was happening.
“It’s been a long time coming,” CL shouts with all the fanfare possible in the opening lines of 2NE1′s debut song. And yes, I guess this has.

Preview: “You know nobody takes that shit seriously, right?” Taehyun blows puffs of cigarette smoke out of the corner of his mouth and squints at the slab of grey, jagged at the edges, engraved as deeply as the scars on his wrists.
Jinwoo stares at the indents, memorizing where the letters jut and curve. He makes it a point to remember useless shit, stuff he can shove into the back of his mind. Shit he can take out late at night when he can’t sleep and needs to keep his mind off the important stuff. He memorizes these words, ingrains the letters deep into the pink tissue between his ears before he pulls out his revolver and empties three rounds right into the faded concrete.
