Thoughts about The Eternals
(spoilers)
Jon Snow and Robb Stark in one film
I love dysfunctional family stories. I love Guardians of the Galaxy for that reason and I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say that The Eternals were an even more dysfunctional family than the Guardians. Which means to say that I loved it.
Ikaris and Druig are complete -albeit sympathetic- a-holes who are most certainly made better by their really truly better halves, Sersi and Makkari.
How dare they use Peter Pan and Wendy and Tinker Bell references for not one, but two tragic couples? I get my Peter Pan references in the MCU like this?? (loved it, thanks)
We stan Thena and Gilgamesh, a stable warrior couple who are just living their best cottage core lives.
We also stan Phastos and his wonderful, wonderful family. I love his storyline. It’s so hopeful. A dad will fight the boss for his son and family.
I liked the moral and existential conflict. I also liked the twist although it really was heartbreaking, especially with how well it was foreshadowed by the film showing how Ikaris was the only one shown never to have formed a connection with humans, only with his family, and his eyes only focused on Sersi.
How each of their beliefs and convictions played well against each other, especially because of their love for each other. I’m biased because I’m human, but ultimately it still wasn’t resolved if it was right to sacrifice billions of lives and billions of planets for one earth.
I like this trend of Marvel starting with Captain Marvel of having a woman be the lead and stand up to men and gods who would underestimate her. I like how Sersi had the (arguably) most powerful power of them all, like Wanda. Starting with Black Widow, this trend was a long time coming.
How past civilizations and history was shown was also breathtaking. I really love what Director Zhao (thanks for the correction!) did with this film. Even if they aren’t household names like Iron Man, Captain America, or Spider-Man (heck I never even knew about The Eternals before this movie), REPRESENTATION MATTERS, and will always matter.
Seriously, thank you once again for Drukkari, Gil/Thena(*sobs*), Ikaris/Sersi (*sobs again*), Phastos/Ben. Jack, Kingo, and Sprite, you are treasures.
