Do you have any particular recs for 1st and 2nd Doctor Who Big Finish audios? Asking particularly because of this weekend's sale, and I need to budget (apologies if this was a double send, the first time the ask box crapped out on me)
You must be a mind-reader because I LITERALLY just opened tumblr to write some recs for the 1st and 2nd Doctor sale when I saw this ask. Here’s my favourites, and a bit on each because I’m incapable of being short and to the point.
-The Rocket Men. One, Ian, Barbara, Vicki. This must be one of the few Doctor Who stories I’ve never heard anyone say a bad word about; it’s one of Big Finish’s very best. It’s about Ian and Barbara and the writing is incredible and I don’t really know what else to say about it.
-Return of the Rocket Men. One, Steven, Dodo. I mention it here because in my opinion it’s as good as the original. But, because it’s sort of a culmination of a lot of Steven’s experiences and there’s some references/spoilers in it, I think it deserves some prior listening: namely Mother Russia, and the Oliver Harper trilogy (The Perpetual Bond/The Cold Equations/The First Wave).
-Companion Chronicles: The First Doctor Volume 2. One, Vicki, Steven, Polly, Ben. One of Big Finish’s best box sets in term of average story quality. It’s got a super spooky story, it’s got a brilliant Dalek story, and it’s got a wonderfully metafictional story. Unlike volume 1, it’s standalone; all you really need to know is that the third story starts with a recreation of the first scene of The Tenth Planet (One’s final TV story).
-Home Truths/The Drowned World/The Guardian of the Solar System. One, Sara, Steven. One of Big Finish’s best trilogies. The first one also works fine alone if you didn’t want to commit to all three (I think I remember that it was originally written as standalone). All that’s really required before listening is a very basic knowledge of the plot of The Daleks’ Master Plan and who Sara Kingdom is.
-Upstairs. One, Vicki, Steven. This has like everything I love about this tardis team: great humour, weird and wacky plot, the main characters just being annoying siblings to each other. Just lots of fun, and some classically Doctor Who ridiculous sci-fi.
-The Lost Stories: The First Doctor Box Set. One, Susan, Ian, Barbara. Mostly a historical about Alexander the Great. I don’t know what it is about it, but I find it so enjoyable and strangely calming.
Of the short trips on sale, my favourites are-The Flywheel Revolution. One. Told from the perspective of a robot who meets One.-Lepidoptery for Beginners. Two, Jamie, Zoe. Someone gets absolute power by controlling the butterfly effect.-Falling. One, Polly, Ben. Idk how to describe it exactly; emotional? Atmospheric? Fairytale-like? It’s about accepting change.
Hmm almost all of these are first Doctor stories. But they’re my favourites! Let me know if you want any more specific suggestions.
Also while we’re talking about 1st and 2nd Doctor stories, I’ll take a moment to recommend Daughter of the Gods, which has both, as well as Jamie, Zoe, Steven, and Katarina! It’s not on sale because it literally came out two weeks ago, but it’s amazing and lives up to its impressive potential! Again, like the Sara Kingdom and Oliver Harper trilogies, having a basic knowledge of the Daleks’ Master Plan is a good thing to have before hearing it.
