A moment of hesitation as he stood right in front of the vending machine, light colored eyes reflecting themselves on the crystal, Itaru’s fingers finally pressed one of the many buttons. A beep and some rumbling, Itaru leaned forward, reaching for the brightly colored energy drink. He didn’t had the energy to pretend liking dark coffee at the current point in time.
The exhaustion from many days without proper sleep might have finally caught up to him, he thought as he downed some long sips of the sugary drink, eyelids droopy, eye bags all too obvious and slightly messy hair sure reduced some points from the handsomeness that had won him the nickname of Prince among his co-workers -and maybe in one newspaper or two, when he managed to crack some though case.
His free hand lingering in the pocket of his black coat, Itaru continued to sip from the can in his way to his office; the last one of the west wing, right after turning left at the very end of the hall.
It was a bit amusing -at least for him- that the curious construction of the building, along with the awkward illumination of this particular hall, made it almost impossible to guess the hall continued to the left. People that walked down this particular path for the first time would always seem startled by the existence of that piece of corridor to the left -and, by extension, by Itaru’s office.
He yawned in between sips of his drink, the idea of a warm bed seeming all too tempting. Yet, it wasn’t as if he could just go back home when there was so much work to be done: papers to be checked, trails to be followed and people to be questioned.
There was a murderer out there and they were nowhere close to find him.
With ‘they’ he of course referred to the special team made for the sake of this investigation. A team of three that had been all so close for some months now, as the leads kept taking them nowhere… Close enough for feelings to appear.
It might be selfish to find love in the middle of a serial killing investigation, but there was nothing a person could do against their own heart. And it wasn’t as if they were neglecting the investigation because of it, so there was nothing to feel guilty of. Yet, the unsolved mystery kept stepping on his shadow, following him like a hungry hyena no matter how much he’d want to ignore it and indulge in the few things he found enjoyable.
Tiredly, Itaru’s fingers looked for the door-knob, turning it around and adding some weight to push the door open. The lights were on -which he had noticed from the hall-, the curtains slightly open, showing the dark street. The rain illuminated by the pole-lights on the other side of the street: the gentle drizzle that was falling when he left the house of a possible informant had now turned into a downpour, making the thought of leaving all the more bothersome. Maybe if there was the prospect of going back home with one -or both- of his lovers he’ll consider driving under the rain. otherwise he might just sleep on the office again.
“It was a waste of time... To make me go driving all the way to the outskirts of the city and then just lie to my face. That lady sure has some guts” he complained once he was inside, resting his weight in the door to make it close before starting to take off his coat. Quite the uncomfortable movements as he juggled with the sleeves and the still half-full can of energizer
